A weekend featuring local favorites Sojoy and the West Coast’s finest The Colleen Raney Trio
Kittery, Maine - Sweet sounds will fill The Dance Hall on the weekend of Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25, from the brassy horns of the locally acclaimed ensemble Sojoy, to the lilting mastery of the West Coast’s finest traditional Irish musicians, The Colleen Raney Trio.
Kicking the weekend off is Sojoy, a chord-less little big band modern jazz septet built around composer, arranger and drummer Jonny Peiffer, performing their cinematic sound celebrations on Friday, July 24 at 8pm.
Jonny Peiffer began performing on the Seacoast in the late 90's with Drika Overton's Portsmouth
Percussive Dance Festival and 'Clara's Dream: A Jazz Nutcracker.' Now with Sojoy, he has gathered an ensemble of the finest improvisers in the area to perform music he has composed and perfected over the past decade and a half. His influences range from Ben Allison, Jaco Pastorius, and Andrew Hill to Ellington, Mingus, and Monk. Sojoy is a new spin on a modern Big Band tradition.
The band also features Zach Lange, trumpet; Matt Langley, saxes; Eric Klaxton, alto; Nick Mainella, tenor; Claude Fried, trombone; Scott Kiefner, bass; and Peiffer on drums.

Then on Saturday, July 25 at 8pm The Colleen Raney Trio, featuring Hanz Araki and Owen Marshall, will take the stage. Raney is a gifted traditional singer who has recently released her fourth album, titled “ ere This is Home” produced by guitarist and singer Aidan Brennan and engineered by Trevor Hutchinson in Dublin, Ireland.
As a member of the thriving Irish music community in the Pacific Northwest, Raney has been fortunate to appear alongside Johnny B. Connolly, Hanz Araki, Cary Novotny, Magical Strings, Tom Creegan, Dale Russ, and Colm MacCárthaigh in addition to her touring work with the West Coast Celtic band Story Road with John Weed and Stuart Mason. Raney has toured extensively, both at home and abroad. Highlights have included The KVMR Grass Valley Celtic Festival, Winston-Salem Celtic Festival, Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts, and Seattle's respected Northwest Folklife Festival, where she has been a performer since 1980. Her music can be heard on radio from Italy, to Ireland, to New York, to Hawaii, to Japan and all parts in between.
Raney's open-minded and -hearted approach to her repertoire was inherited from, and instilled by, her upbringing in Seattle's celebrated Raney Family, steeped in step-dancing and song. She breathes new life into the old tunes, finding facets in the music that haven't been heard before and performing in the company of gifted friends who illustrate both the most delicate and upbeat aspects of her winning style. It’s earned her a following both among longtime adherents of Celtic music and younger fans who are new to the genre.
