Thunder Pitchers Combine to Strike Out 14 in the Victory
Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (5-9) couldn't muster any offense against the Trenton Thunder (9-5) on Thursday night, dropping the first of a four-game series at Hadlock Field by a final of 5-0. It marks the fourth time the Sea Dogs have been shutout this season.The Thunder got all the scoring they would need in the top of the first inning. After Sea Dogs starter Mike Augliera (L, 0-3) recorded two quick outs, Greg Bird and Eric Jagielo delivered back-to-back doubles to give Trenton a 1-0 lead. Gary Sanchez followed up with a single that got past Sea Dogs left fielder Oscar Tejeda and allowed another run to score to make it 2-0.
Four of the five runs scored by Trenton in the game came with two outs. On the season, 32 of the 77 runs (41.6%) allowed by Portland have come with two outs in an inning. Each team stranded 11 runners in the game, but Trenton went 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position, while Portland finished 0-for-9.
After being battered by the Sea Dogs in his last start in Trenton, Thunder starter Caleb Smith (W, 1-2) looked much more impressive, working five scoreless innings and allowing just four hits while walking two and striking out five. Caleb Cotham pitched the second leg of the shutout, striking out five in two hitless innings. Nick Goody finished things off, going the final two innings and striking out four while allowing two hits. Trenton pitchers combined to strike out 14 Sea Dogs in the game, a new season high for both teams.
The series continues tomorrow evening at Hadlock Field, first pitch is at 6:00 PM. Mike McCarthy (1-1, 8.00) will take the mound for Portland, while Luis Severino (1-0, 0.90) will get the start for Trenton.
