Portland, Maine - Portland Public Library and Cornerstones of Science announce a series of monthly Science Cafés to be held at Portland Public Library. The Science Café format is an informal approach to discussing and understanding scientific research and its relevance to people in their everyday lives. Science café events are held in Portland Public Library’s open, glass-walled atrium that faces Monument Square in Portland during the lunch hour and will offer light refreshments in an informal, casual atmosphere. Students, professionals, and anyone interested in getting the inside look at what scientists are doing – and why – are invited to attend. The events are free and open to the public.
Below is a list of the first three cafés of the new series.
Wednesday, April 16th: Cool Tools
Organizers from the Maine Tool Library will be here to talk about this new community resource, answer questions, sign up new members, and demonstrate a few of the tools available to borrow. The inventory at the MTL includes a wide range kitchen tools such as dehydrators, cider presses and canning supplies, power and hand tools including drills, saws, compressors and a pressure washer, and garden tools such as rakes, spades, blowers and hedge trimmers.
Thursday, May 21: Meteorology From Mountain Top to Sea Level - Living and working on top of Mt. Washington & forecasting Portland’s weather – how one is important to the other
Come learn about the science behind weather forecasting from Sarah Long, a Meteorologist Portland’s channel 8. She will discuss how Maine’s weather is affected from different geological points around the country, and will share images from her research trips on Mt. Washington. Come check out the gear and props used by scientists to understand weather patterns, and more!
Thursday, June 18th: Fire Science and Safety
Captain David Petruccelli from Portland Fire Department will present on fire prevention & safety, we will discuss the science of fire behavior. Participants will witness a fire extinguisher demonstration, and learn about how various types of extinguishers conquer flames.
