Blue Hill, Maine - Blue Hill Public Library will host an exhibit curated by Frederica Marshall during the month of May. The show, Kintsugi: the Beauty of Imperfection, will include work by Frederica and 12 other artists. The public is invited to a reception on Saturday May 2nd from 2:00 to 4:30 PM.
Kintsugi is the Japanese concept that something that has been broken and mended has increased value and beauty. Traditionally a broken pottery bowl will be repaired with gold lacquer. The break is enhanced and the imperfection is viewed as more beautiful than unbroken pottery. The piece has a history and there is an acceptance of what has happened.
Frederica Marshall has invited 12 artists to interpret this aesthetic and will curate the exhibit. They have created works using Ming Dynasty pottery shards, photography, glass, painting, old sweaters and more!
Frederica grew up and taught in Japan for more than 28 years. She studied Sumi-e painting for 10 years in Japan and is a Master Brush Painter with a BFA in Western Painting and MA in Art Education. She has taught more than 20,000 students. She has won numerous awards in Japan and the US and has had more than 20 solo shows. She has written two books on Sumi-e and has a gallery, studio and art school in Deer Isle Maine.
The exhibit will be available for viewing during library hours starting May 2nd. For more information, call the library at 374-5515, or check Frederica’s website at www.fredericamarshall.com.
