Phytoplankton are photosynthesizing microorganisms that live in our oceans, seas, and lakes. Despite being so small, phytoplankton have a huge effect on our world. Not only are these tiny drifters the backbone of the oceanic food chain, they are responsible for regulating carbon the carbon cycle in our waterways, and even contribute much of the atmosphere’s oxygen. Ivona’s presentation will elaborate how important phytoplankton are to our world, as well as how harmful they can be if their populations go out of control through algae blooms due to rising ocean temperatures and pollution.

Author Peter Pfeiffer Presents “Hard Chance: Tree Farming in Troubled Times”

Author Peter Pfeiffer Presents “Hard Chance: Tree Farming in Troubled Times” March 12 at Camden Public Library

“Hard Chance” seeks to explain both the how and the why of becoming an independent tree farmer in northern Maine. The how addresses the dangerous challenges of a solo logging operation as well as how to make a living working in harmony with the forest. The why includes a history of the local back-to-the-land movement during the turbulent 1970s and the subsequent satisfactions of living in a backwoods community. Author Peter Pfeiffer will present the story of “Hard Chance: Tree Farming in Troubled Times” at the Camden Public Library  on Thursday, March 12, at 7:00 pm.

Pfeiffer grew up in Waterville, Maine, and after traveling the world, moved north to Somerset County in the early 1970s. He has been an independent logger ever since, twice winning Tree Farmer of the Year for Somerset County, and successfully completing the Certified Logging Professional course. He has also written numerous plays for the In Spite of Life Players Theater company.

In a review in the Portland Press Herald, Mary Pols reports,  “Pfeiffer’s rebellious youth led him to Berkeley, riding his old BMW motorcycle cross-country in the winter of 1970-71, determined to bring ‘imperialist Amerikkka to its knees.’ He picketed fruit farms on behalf of striking Chicano farm workers. He protested the Vietnam War and looked for a revolutionary group that suited his purposes. He took classes (including in carpentry) at Merritt College in Oakland. And eventually, he came home and heard Scott Nearing speak at a country fair. That’s when he got serious about homesteading.

“What are the retirement plans for a 67-year-old tree farmer who has given away more copies of his memoir than he has sold? ‘I’m going to cut wood this winter and maybe I’ll cut some at my brother’s place next winter,’ he says. ‘I’m getting kind of worn out to tell you the truth. I really love this kind of work. . . . I just wish I could keep going until I dropped, and have the coyotes drag me off.’”

William N. Browning says in a  review on Amazon, “Peter Pfeiffer has written an exceptional book. . . . his prose is understated and lyrical; often lovely and captivating; frequently hilarious and then suddenly, marvelously serious. He wanders, just as he recounts his wandering through his own early adult life, from stories of one incident to another. Here, he is clinging to the edge of a cliff hoping a huge pine will not pitch down onto him toppling him into oblivion; and then he is in prison reading Robert Musil’s Man Without Qualities and helping us remember, or discover, what a splendid book it is. . . .
“Pfeiffer holds our attention with his fine-grained description of managing the dangers of cutting trees alone in deep winter and then leaps adroitly to a wider, thoughtful reflection on how we all manage our ambitions. Work madly to get ahead, or work easily and survive for another day? In the woods, these are serious questions.”

Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event on March 12.

Use Caution when Clearing Snow and Ice to Prevent Heating Oil Tank Spills

AUGUSTA, Maine - With the record amount of snow that Maine has seen this year, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) cautions about possible damage to outside heating oil tanks from snow and ice. The fuel filter attached to the bottom fitting of a residential oil storage tank is a weak component and makes a good target for falling and settling snow to shear off that connection. If this happens, most of the contents of the tank will be released before repairs can be made. These spills can contaminate drinking water wells and surface waters, degrade indoor air quality and require expensive repair or replacement of the tank, not to mention the cost of purchasing replacement fuel.

Falling snow and ice is the second most common cause of releases from home heating oil tanks (internal corrosion is number one). To help prevent this from happening, DEP suggests having a licensed oil technician install a steel filter protector, regularly and carefully clear snow from over and around the tank, remove snow and ice from the roof above to prevent slides and when doing so, be mindful of the tank below.

If a spill does occur, please report it immediately to Maine DEP's 24-hour oil spill emergency response hotline at 1-800-482-0777.

For more information from DEP about keeping your home heating oil tank safe, visit http://www.maine.gov/dep/spills

Governor to Introduce Bill Addressing Attorney General’s Overreach of Authority

AUGUSTA, Maine – Governor Paul R. LePage yesterday announced he is introducing legislation to prevent the Attorney General’s overreaching of authority.

The Governor’s proposed bill clarifies and restricts the scope of the Attorney General’s authority as it pertains to the receipt and spending of public dollars. Governor LePage initiated the bill as a result of Attorney General Janet Mills taking unilateral action after the State of Maine received a $21.5 million settlement.

In a letter to Legislative leadership, Governor LePage cites McGraw-Hill and Standard & Poor’s litigation in which an agreement of the settlement allocates to the State of Maine $21.5 million – “the largest ever one-time settlement in Maine history,” according to the Attorney General.

The settlement stipulates the amounts allocated to the State are to “be used or expended in any way permitted by applicable state law at each State’s sole discretion.” Instead, Attorney General Mills has reserved to herself “sole discretion” over how the money would be used within a list of specified purposes related to consumer protection, the Governor explains in the letter.

“She does not have the authority to take settlement proceeds on behalf of the state and unilaterally make policy decisions about how that money should be spent,” the Governor wrote to legislative leaders. “Not only does her action overstep her authority, but it is also repugnant to the constitution. As you well know, the constitution clearly asserts that the power to appropriate revenue is held exclusively by the Legislature and checked by the Executive.”

Author Talk with Denise Park Parsons

Rockport, Maine - Denise Park Parsons will talk about her book Touchstone: A Life unseen at The Rockport Public Library March 14th, 2:00 pm.

In Touchstone, Denise Park Parsons tells the story of her daughter’s life with Aicardi syndrome, which becomes the lens through which the reader views the author’s life over thirty years. The book tells how Park Parsons encountered the “three Ds”—death, disability, and divorce—and remained on her feet. It is a candid, revelatory look into one woman’s struggle to advocate for Emma in an indifferent educational system and an often confounded medical system. In the process, Denise and her husband started a newsletter in 1983 for parents of Aicardi syndrome children. That newsletter has matured into a global network that is a testament to what empowered parents can accomplish for their children and families.

How do you accomplish all that and maintain a loving, vibrant family life? Park Parsons succeeds, and she will succeed also in making you cry with her, flinch at the seemingly insurmountable difficulties, and rejoice at the delight nestled within adversity. And through it all you will be rooting for her and for Emma, who became the touchstone by which her mother measures what is valuable and good in life.

USS Constitution Commemorates 200th Anniversary of Dual Victory over Royal Navy

By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Victoria Kinney, USS Constitution Public Affairs
CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (NNS) -- The crew of USS Constitution commemorated the bicentennial of Old Ironsides' final battle during the War of 1812, her unprecedented dual-victory over Royal Navy ships HMS Cyane and HMS Levant, on Friday, Feb. 20 in Charlestown Navy Yard.

Constitution Sailors fired the ship's saluting battery at noon to commemorate the start of the battle, and visitors to the ship received dramatic accounts of the battle from Constitution crew members throughout the day. At sunset, the saluting gun was fired again in commemoration of the conclusion of both the battle and the War of 1812.

The evening gun salute was followed by a ceremony and reception at the USS Constitution Museum. The reception opened with welcoming remarks from Cmdr. Sean D. Kearns, Constitution's 73rd commanding officer, and Anne Rand, president of the USS Constitution Museum, and then featured an account of the battle from a current crew member, Damage Controlman Fireman Terray Franklin, followed by remarks from the guest speaker, Professor James Holmes of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

"The ceremony today was a great way to commemorate what was arguably Constitution's greatest victory under the command of perhaps her greatest captain," said Kearns. "It was also a fitting time to reflect on the entire war and the peace which has existed among the belligerents ever since. As Professor Holmes mentioned in his remarks, it is as important now as it was then for us to be able to look past old enmities and strive for peace and partnership with other nations."

Representatives from Boston's Canadian and Irish consulates were also on hand to give remarks and toast the 200 years of peace that has existed between the U.S., Canada and Great Britain since the conclusion of the war.

"The War of 1812 helped solidify the North American borders, and helped create a peace between Canada and America," said Frank Ruddock, Canada's consul general in Boston. "The war helped forge a truce between the countries, and allowed us to move forward together."

Constitution's battle against Cyane and Levant originally took place on Feb. 20, 1815 near the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. At the start of the battle, Constitution was confronted by the two Royal Navy ships simultaneously, as British officers were now under orders to only confront solo American frigates in pairs or as part of a squadron. Under the command of Capt. Charles Stewart, Constitution was able to out-maneuver and eventually cause the British ships to separate from one another.

With the Cyane and Levant split up, Stewart was able to battle and capture the Royal Navy ships as if he were fighting two separate one-on-one battles. The Cyane-Levant battle is still studied at the Naval War College today to better understand the superior tactical strategies utilized by Stewart and the crew of Old Ironsides 200 years ago.

Breandan O Caollai, Ireland's consul general in Boston, spoke of the relationship between Capt. Charles Stewart, and the Irishman Charles Stewart Parnell, Stewart's grandson. Parnell is regarded as one of the most famous patriots in Ireland's history and was founder and leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party.

"Our histories are intertwined," said O Caollai. "Charles Stewart greatly influenced our Charles Stewart Parnell, and helped forge Parnell into the history of Ireland. Growing up, I would learn about Parnell and pass his namesake street, and now to represent Ireland at the ship celebrating his grandfather's victory is truly an honor."

Friday's event was the finale of Constitution's three-year bicentennial commemoration of the War of 1812, which concluded in 1815. Old Ironsides' first two victories in the war were against HMS Guerriere on Aug. 19, 1812 and HMS Java on Dec. 29, 1812.

USS Constitution, the world's oldest commissioned warship afloat, actively defended sea lanes against global threats from 1797 to 1855. Now a featured destination on Boston's Freedom Trail, Constitution and her crew of U.S. Navy Sailors offer community outreach and education about the ship's history and the importance of naval seapower to more than 500,000 visitors each year. USS Constitution is scheduled to be dry docked in Charlestown Navy Yard in the spring of 2015 for a three-year planned restoration period.
