Russia Resurgent: 2015 Camden Conference

Russia Resurgent: 2015 Camden Conference

Camden Maine -
The World Comes To Camden Maine.  This past weekend the world came to the MidCoast Maine area for the sold out Camden Conference.  What could possibly draw so many to the coast of Maine in the middle of one of the worst winters on record?  A topic as timely as tonight's news, Russia and it’s influence on the world today.  Ad to that a list of speakers who are a who’s who of world diplomacy From Russia, China, Germany, Bulgaria and the United States.

Russia Resurgent covered three main themes. First, the historic, economic and political factors that have shaped how Russians conceive of themselves and their place in the world. Second how Russia is viewed by other countries of Europe and Asia. Third, in-depth perspectives from Washington, Europe, China and Moscow on the diplomatic and geostrategic challenges in U.S.– Russia relations.

The Conference was hosted again by Nicholas Burns.  From 2005 until his retirement, Burns was
Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs—the third-ranking position in the State Department—where he led U.S. negotiations with Iran, India, and Kosovo and supervised U.S. diplomacy in all regions of the world. Burns also was U.S. Ambassador to NATO and to Greece. He was the State Department Spokesman for two years and spent five years on the National Security Council (NSC) staff, including serving as Special Assistant to President Bill Clinton, focusing on the former Soviet Union. Under President George H. W. Bush, he was Director for Soviet (and then Russian) Affairs on the National Security Council.

Over the course of the three day conference Russia it’s history, how it relates to today's world and it’s prospects for the future were covered with the following sessions:
The Riddle inside the Enigma: Origins of Russian Conduct at Home and in the World
History Matters: Politics of the Past in Putin's Russia
Post-Crimean Russia and Prospects for its Future
The Russian Economy and its Influence on Politics
Russia-Ukraine and the Broader Implications
Europe’s Russia Challenge
The Sino-Russian Honeymoon
Rethinking U.S.-Russian Relations
Russia 2015: Lost in Transition
Video of all of these sessions will be available at: https://www.camdenconference.org/2015-conference/  in about a month.

Without doubt this had to be one of the most timely topics ever covered be the conference.  Attendees came away with a much better understanding of where Russia is coming from.

History of the Camden Conference

“In 1986, a handful of Midcoast residents with insight, enthusiasm, and connections launched the idea of “bringing the world to Camden.”

By February 1987, they had managed to attract a handful of big-name speakers and about seventy like-minded people for an intensive foreign affairs weekend. With strong ties to the worlds of diplomacy, journalism, industry, and academia, the organizers contacted former colleagues, rolled up their sleeves, and did everything from stacking chairs to directing traffic.

Fast forward twenty-seven years, and the world has indeed arrived in Camden. For a weekend every February, eight hundred or so people now sign on to listen, learn, and question. High school and college students from Maine and beyond are active attendees at the Conference.

Camden Conference topics have included The Making of American Foreign Policy, The Influence of the News Media on Foreign Policy, U.S. – Japan Relations, Globalization, The Global Politics of Food and Water, Religion, Global Leadership, and a number focused on specific regions of the world: China, the Middle East, and Latin America are just a few.

Camden Conference attendees are from a wide variety of backgrounds and ages. What they have in common is a keen interest in foreign policy, a desire to participate in public debate, and to always learn more about the world they live in. Most recently, the Camden Conference made a considerable investment in internet technologies. This has increased its presence significantly, facilitating the live streaming to two satellite venues and making the Camden Conference available to people throughout the world.

The Camden Conference is still a volunteer-driven organization, and committed to keeping registration fees low and accessibility high. Funding comes from individual gifts and memberships, business memberships, corporate sponsorships, and grants from institutions, foundations and corporations.” https://www.camdenconference.org/about/the-camden-conference/
