Portland, Maine - The Sam L Cohen Children’s Library is excited to present two new plays by A Company of Girls. The company will be performing in the Rines Auditorium at the Portland Public Library, during school vacation week, on Friday, April 25th.There will be an 11:00 am performance of “Twice upon a Time” and at 1:00 pm, “The Princess and the Princess” will be performed. Each show is approximately 30 minutes. In “Twice Upon A Time”, the spells of three whimsical witches go awry and Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Beauty, and the Princess and the Pea, all appear out of nowhere, much to everyone’s aggravation. Unhappy dwarves, soldiers and a frog materialize as the witches’ spells continue to go wrong. The frog has been turned into a prince and the princesses are all turning into frogs before the witches stumble on to the solution to this fine kettle of fish.
“The Princess and The Princess” is about Popplepea, a poor polite princess, and Twinkleberry, a rich rude princess who meet on a narrow mountain path and neither will step aside to let the other one pass. Everyone who comes to try to help gets stuck on the mountain with them. After a riddle provided by the Royal Wise Person proves that both princesses are “real” it, is Popplepea who graciously steps aside – not because she has to, but because she chooses to.
A Company of Girls’ mission is to strengthen and empower girls and their families and foster community through the arts. Serving the Greater Portland community for the past sixteen years, ACOG is an award-winning, nationally recognized after school theater/arts prevention program. At A Company of Girls, girls come together after school and learn about theatre, the arts, and social skills. It is a safe place where they can discuss issues that are important to them. It is also a fun place, just for them, where they can discuss “girl things.” Their time together may include activities like drawing, journaling, painting, cooking, attending arts events, creative writing, sleepovers, apple picking, community service, pot-luck family dinners, dancing, fundraising, and much, much more.
