Augusta, Maine - Lithgow Public Library will host an evening of poetry and music in conjunction with A Capital Read 2013, the library’s annual community-wide reading project, on Thursday, April 18 at 6 p.m. in the library’s Reading Room.
Acclaimed Maine poets Kristen Lindquist and Dave Morrison, along with acoustic musicians Anna and Dave Patterson, will perform pieces inspired by themes from The Submission, this year’s A Capital Read selection. Written by first-time novelist Amy Waldman, The Submission explores the controversy and complex emotions surrounding a memorial for the victims of 9/11.
Lindquist, a Camden-based poet, blogger and naturalist, publishes a daily original haiku on her blog, Book of Days: klindquist.blogspot.com. She works for a coastal Maine land trust, and her latest book of poems is titled Transportation.
Morrison is a writer of novels, short stories and poetry. Years before he was a Camden-based poet, Morrison played guitar in rock & roll bars in Boston and New York City. Morrison’s newest book of poetry, his seventh, is Clubland, a collection of poems about rock bars and the life of a band member. Both Morrison and Lindquist have had poems featured on Garrison Keillor’s Writer’s Almanac on NPR.
Husband and wife music duo Anna and Dave Patterson are
returning to Lithgow Library after previous performances as both a duo and as members of the Portland-based band This Way, which has performed for Lithgow’s Summer Concert Series. Since leaving the active schedule of being full-time members of a touring band, the Pattersons have been writing and recording their own music from their home studio, and perform duo gigs at small venues.
A Capital Read 2013 is generously underwritten by the Friends of Lithgow Library and is presented in partnership with the University of Maine at Augusta. The event is free and open to the public.
Waldman’s appearance on Tuesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. at the University of Maine at Augusta will be the highlight of A Capital Read 2013. Other programs in April will include a community art exhibit, an evening of poetry and music, book discussions, and an appearance by author/human rights advocate Reza Jalali.
