2013 School Library Media Specialist Named

August, Maine - On March 29th at a surprise assembly, the students and staff of Hall-Dale Middle and High Schools cheered as Librarian Jody Bachelder was honored as the Maine Association of School Libraries (MASL) School Library Media Specialist of the Year.

The award, known as the Walter J. Taranko School Library Media Specialist Award, is given annually to honor an outstanding Maine School Library Media Specialist who embodies the characteristics that Walter J. Taranko espoused. Jody Bachelder works every day to provide the best services and resources for the students in her school and she also mentors, collaborates, and advocates for school librarians across Maine.

Walter J. Taranko was a leader and a man of vision. He supported strong school library programs during his 35 years as the State Library liaison to the Department of Education. Walt was a Viet Nam vet, a librarian, a teacher and a person who helped others to make good things happen in their own lives. Many librarians in Maine are beneficiaries of programs that he brought to the State of Maine.

Linda Lord, State Librarian, "I am honored and delighted to add my congratulations to the many Jody Bachelder has received. School librarianship is so critical to student learning. Jody demonstrates this every day in her work with teachers, students, and colleagues across the State."
