Southern Maine WVB Knocks Off Salem State 3-0

  GORHAM, Maine -- Junior outside hitter Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) picked up her sixth double-double of the season Thursday night leading the University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-16) victory over visiting Salem State University in a non-conference match at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.
            The win was the fourth straight for the Huskies, and improved their overall record to 9-3.  The Vikings, who snapped a nine-match losing skid with a win over Nichols College on Tuesday, fall to 2-10 on the season.
            Southern Maine took the first two sets by identical 25-19 scores as Williamson had seven kills in the first set and six more in the third.  With Williamson serving, the Huskies scored the final six points to take the final set 25-16.
            Williamson had another big night knocking down 21 kills on a .576 hitting percentage (21-2-33) and digging up 10 balls.  She also had five service aces and two blocks.  In her last two matches, Williamson has a combined 42 kills and a .633 hitting percentage.
            Junior Mo Raymond (Sanbornton, N.H.) added nine kills and rookie Faolain Harrington (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) had seven kills on 10 attacks without an error.  Senior Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) passed out 23 assists while sophomore Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) had 13 assists.  The Huskies racked up a solid .345 hitting percentage (43-13-87) for the match.
            Juniors Olivia Swiatek (Rockland, Mass./Shore Shore Voke) and Emily Russo (Newport, R.I./Tiverton) led the Vikings with six kills apiece.  Rookie Morgan Adams (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) had 12 assists, and sophomore Mackenzie Salls (Turner Falls, Mass.) passed out 11 helpers.
            Southern Maine will host a tri-match on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Brandeis University coming to the Hill Gym.  Salem State travels to Bridgewater State University for a tri-match along with Daniel Webster College.
