GORHAM, Maine –  Senior Nicole Burgess (Mexico, Maine/Mountain Valley) and junior Katie Martin (Waterbury Center, Vermont/Harwood Union) each scored a first half goal to lead the Plymouth State University Panthers to a 2-1 lead over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey game Tuesday evening at Hannaford Field.

The win is the fourth straight for the Panthers who have outscored their opponents 24-3 over the last four games and are 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the LEC.  Southern Maine drops its third straight game to fall to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the Little East.

Burgess scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season just minutes into the game to spot PSU an early 1-0 lead.  Burgess received the ball 35 yards from the scoring circle and then weaved her way through the Huskies' defensive to find herself one-on-one with USM senior goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine).  Burgess launched a strong shot to the right of the net to beat Kasbohm.  Martin doubled the PSU advantage in the 15th minute after collecting her own rebound after Kasbohm's initial save for her fifth goal of the season.

Southern Maine picked up its play in the second half and the Huskies were able to break up the shutout in the 69th minute when junior forward Lindsay Jackson (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) scored off of a deflection, but it was too little too late as time expired.  The goal is Jackson's first of the season.

The Panthers, who entered today's contest averaging 4.4 goals per game despite being shutout in their first two contests, out shot USM 11-0 in the first and 16-4 for the game. PSU also had a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners.  Kasbohm finished the game with 10 saves in a strong effort for the Huskies, while sophomore Dom Tarr (Antrim, N.H./Contoocook Valley) made one save in the win.

Southern Maine is on the road for its next contest at UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.) in Little East Conference action.  Plymouth State hosts Western Connecticut on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) in an LEC game.
