Mid Coast Hospital Announces Plan for Parkview Medical Center Campus

Vision Includes New Primary Care Practice,
Community Health & Wellness Center, Expansion of Cancer Care

BRUNSWICK, ME – Mid Coast Hospital unveils its preliminary plans for the redevelopment of its Parkview Medical Center campus. Renovation of the former hospital includes expansion of primary care, cancer care, outpatient clinical services, and community health and wellness programs. The campus master plan supports Mid Coast–Parkview Health’s vision to provide the highest quality care, to improve the health of the community, and to lower healthcare costs.

The announcement comes one year after the integration of Brunswick’s two beloved healthcare institutions. During the past year, Mid Coast–Parkview Health focused on facilitating a smooth transition for patients and employees, assessing community needs, and identifying solutions and strategies to best care for the health of the community.

Lois Skillings, President and CEO of Mid Coast–Parkview Health commented, “Together as one, Mid Coast–Parkview Health is a strong and unified healthcare system, providing integrated care for this region of Maine. This past year, we have worked diligently toward fulfilling our goals of reducing costs and expanding services to support the healthcare needs of our community.”

Since August of last year, the healthcare system has absorbed 195 former employees of Parkview Adventist Medical Center, increased primary and specialty care services, and saved more than $8 million in healthcare costs for the community.

“Even as we continue to develop the master plan for the Parkview campus, we’ve transitioned many non-clinical departments to the campus. Realigning services has helped to accommodate growth in our practices by freeing up clinical space in essential areas. The Parkview campus is already feeling more vibrant and as we move forward with the master plan it will be even more active, with added services for our community,” said Randee Reynolds, Vice President of Community Health at Mid Coast–Parkview Health.

Mid Coast Hospital has already renovated approximately 9,000 square feet of the Parkview facility, now home to the organization’s accounting, patient financial services, health sciences library, and development teams. Current outpatient clinical services available include medical oncology, hematology, and laboratory. Renovations to additional areas are scheduled to begin in fall 2016 with the expected completion in early 2018.

In addition to a new seven-provider primary care practice, a cornerstone of the renovation plan is an innovative 9,000 square foot wellness center that will serve as a hub for community health and wellness programs such as cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, diabetes and cancer medical exercise, weight loss and lifestyle classes, stress reduction, as well as chronic disease prevention and management. The facility will offer a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen and space for education, resources, and counseling.

The wellness center will be joined by an expanded medical oncology practice, fully integrated and aligned with MaineHealth/Maine Medical Center and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Boston, to provide a full continuum of cancer care close to home. An adjoining 4,300 square foot Medical Infusion Center will consolidate the organization’s infusion services and provide additional outpatient medical treatments including hydration therapy, transfusions, injections, and more.

The architect firm SMRT of Portland is overseeing the design of the proposed $6.2 million renovation, along with the construction management services of Landry/French of Scarborough.

“After review and analysis of our outpatient clinical services and programs, we have created this plan to best accommodate growth, while improving access to care,” said Skillings. “We are engaging staff and patients in developing spaces that will help us deliver high quality, accountable care. This plan is also aligned with our community health needs assessment and feedback from the community about expanded access to primary care, cancer care, and community health and wellness services.”
