With the bases empty and two down in the bottom of the first, Andrew Benintendi singled to left, then Nate Freiman crushed Kyle Freeland's offering to put Portland ahead 2-0.
Making a spot start, Mitch Atkins (W, 1-1) delivered a season-high six scoreless innings for the Sea Dogs. Atkins allowed just four hits while walking none and striking out a season-high eight batters.
Kyle Freeland (L, 4-5) was making his third start this season against Portland and threw seven
innings for the Yard Goats, allowing only the two runs on the homer by Freiman. Freeland allowed eight hits while walking one and striking out four.
Hartford struck for a run in the top of the seventh off of Luis Ysla. After a leadoff triple by Ryan McMahon, Rosell Herrera lined a sac fly to left to cut the Sea Dogs' lead down to 2-1.
Ysla survived two innings, allowing just the run on three hits and three walks while striking out one and stranding four baserunners over the two frames.
Nik Turley pitched the ninth for Portland and was able to work around a leadoff walk and strand the tying run at third to end the ballgame.

Portland, Maine - German Marquez limited the Sea Dogs (16-31) to two runs in 6.2 innings and the Hartford Yard Goats (29-17) won the series opener 3-2 on Friday night at Hadlock Field.Hartford struck for the game's first run in the second inning on an RBI double by Dillon Thomas to score Rosell Herrera. They extended the lead to 2-0 in the third on a dropped pop-up by Aneury Tavarez in left field that allowed Raimel Tapia to score from first base.
Teddy Stankiewicz (L, 1-4) worked his eighth quality start in nine tries this year. The righty allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 6+ innings, walking three and striking out three.
Portland reduced the deficit in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout by Andrew Benintendi to score Sean Coyle from third base and make it a 2-1 game. Hartford added an insurance run in the seventh on a wild pitch by Williams Jerez that allowed Jan Vazquez to score to make it 3-1.
German Marquez (W, 4-2) allowed two runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings while walking one and striking out five. The Sea Dogs scored their second run on an RBI fielder's choice by Tzu-Wei Lin as he beat out a double play ball to allow Jake Romanski to score. Rayan Gonzalez retired all four batters he faced in relief and Matt Carasiti earned his league-leading 14th save of the year with a perfect ninth
