Altoona, Pa. - The Altoona Curve (23-18) scored six runs in the eighth inning, and grabbed the series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs (15-27), 8-0, Friday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Portland drops to 4-17 on the road, the Curve have won nine of their last 10 games.
Altoona's David Whitehead (2-4) worked five innings on 2 hits, 3 walks and one strikeout to earn the win. Whitehead escaped a one-out bases loaded jam in the third, fanning Sean Coyle and getting Andrew Benintendi on a flyout to right.
Teddy Stankiewicz (1-3) notched his seven quality start, but was the tough-luck loser for Portland.
Stankiewicz allowed both runs in the second inning on a two-run double by Barrett Barnes. The righty worked six innings on 5 hits, 2 runs, 4 walks and one strikeout.
Altoona struck for six runs on just one hit in the eighth inning off Simon Mercedes and Chandler Shepherd. Barnes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 3-0. Mercedes and Shepherd issued three straight bases-loaded walks. The Curve's final two runs came on a fielder's choice-error by Wendell Rijo.
Portland had three hits, singles by Sean Coyle and Jake Romanski. Nate Freiman doubled in the ninth to extend his on-base streak to 10 games.
The Sea Dogs and Altoona Curve play game two of their series on Saturday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Aaron Wilkerson (2-1, 1.37) makes his 8th start of the season for the Sea Dogs. Altoona counters with lefty Brandon Waddell (3-0, 2.41). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM, pregame coverage begins on the WPEI US Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network at 5:40 PM.
