ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine Field Hockey team improves to
14-2 on the season after defeating UNH 4-1, the first time since 2009.
The Black Bears also improve to 4-0 in America East conference play,
while New Hampshire drops to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Emily Corbett started the game in goal for Maine.
UNH opened the game with the first goal 7:25 into the game, Lindsey
Nerbonne was able to poke the ball into the cage to give UNH a 1-0
advantage.
Midway through the first half, Maine was able to tie the game at 1-1, with a goal from Marissa Shaw, it was her eighth of the year with the assist coming from Ella Mosky.
Three minutes later Jessica Skillings scored from a Adriana Martineau assist to give the Black Bears a 2-1 advantage.
At half, Maine outshot UNH 10-4 and UNH had the advantage on penalty corners 2-1. Corbett stopped two shots in the first half.
Emma Cochran started in goal for the Black Bears in the second half.
Sydney Veljacic
was able to score her team leading 10th goal of the year off of a
corner, with the assist coming from Jessica Skillings giving Maine a 3-1
lead.
On another corner opportunity, Samantha Wagg
was able to score Maine's fourth unanswered goal of the game with the
assist coming from Skillings again to give Maine a commanding 4-1
advantage.
Cochran saved three shots in the second half for the Black Bears.
Emily Corbett receives the win for Maine and she improves her record to
8-1 on the season.
Maine outshot UNH 15-10 and UNH held the advantage on penalty corners 10-5.
Maine returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 18 as they take on UMass
Lowell at 1:00 p.m. at the University of Maine Field Hockey Complex.
