WATERVILLE, ME --- The Thomas College field hockey
team entered its contest with the University of Maine at Farmington
hoping for a split in the season series between the two rivals but came
away with a 4-1 loss in front of the home crowd at Bernatchez Field.
UMF defeated Thomas, 2-1, in a North Atlantic Conference match on Saturday in Farmington.
The Terriers scored first as Abigail Dunn
dribbled past a handful of defenders to tally an unassisted goal in the
21st minute. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Beavers' Jenessa
Talarico drove home a rebound past Thomas goalkeeper Brittany Fox less than a minute later to knot the score at 1-1.
UMF added a trio of goals in the second half – the first by Sarita
Crandall in the 41st minute,
followed by a pair tallies from Emmah Spahr
in 47th and 50th minutes, respectively. Crandall took a feed from
Rebecca Young and beat Terrier reserve Jessica Russell
to her left side. Spahr scored her first goal off an assist from Carly
Raymond, the second was unassisted as she was able to thread the needle
through a significant amount of traffic in front of the goal cage.
Both teams finished with nine shots and three saves, while Thomas held a 9-6 edge in penalty corners.
Wednesday's result, which does not count in the North Atlantic
Conference standings, moves Thomas to 6-8 overall, while UMF improves to
7-3. The Terriers, 2-1 in the NAC, dip back into league play at 1 p.m.
Saturday as they host New England College for Homecoming and Family
Weekend.
