Monty Python Tribute Runs Away to The Grand!

Ellsworth, Maine - The film program continues at The Grand with a double-feature tribute to the irreverent, subversive British comedy troupe Monty Python on Saturday, September 20th, beginning with Monty Python's Life of Brian at 4 pm and continuing with Monty Python and the Holy Grail at 7 pm. Tickets are available at The Grand box office (667-9500) or online at www.grandonline.org and are $7 for general admission, $6 for seniors, and $5 for Grand members for each film.

In Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979. UK 1 hr, 32 min. Directed by Terry Jones. R. English) the British sketch comedy group takes on the greatest story ever told in one of the most outrageous pieces of cinematic satire ever made! On a midnight clear 2,000 years ago, three wise men enter a manger where a babe is wrapped in swaddling clothes. It is an infant called Brian… and the three wise men are in the wrong manger. Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, and Terry Gilliam play multiple roles, with Sue Jones-Davies, Carol Cleveland, Spike Milligan, and The Beatles' George Harrison (who also executive produced) filling out the cast.

Gilliam. PG-13.) is arguably (and ironically) the sketch group’s most revered film, which has helped to define “irreverence” as well as becoming an instant cult classic. In the film (which later was the basis of the Broadway musical extravanganza Monty Python's Spamalot- opening at The Grand on Friday, October 17th at 7:30 pm), Python takes on the legend of King Arthur, juxtaposing the barest outline of a plot with an unending stream of anachronistic one-liners, non sequiturs, and slapstick set pieces. The Knights of the Round Table set off in search of the Holy Grail on foot, as their menservants make horse galloping sounds with coconut shells. With Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin as most of the onscreen roles, ably backed up by Carol Cleveland and Connie Booth.

The film program continues at The Grand with a weekend tribute to a great comic and dramatic actor, the late Robin Williams, beginning on Friday, November 21st at 7 pm with Good Will Hunting and continuing with Dead Poets Society on Saturday, November 22nd at 7 pm, and concluding on Sunday, November 23rd at 2 pm with Mrs. Doubtfire.
