GARDENING IN NEW ENGLAND

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – The Scarborough Garden Club and the Scarborough Public Library will join to host “Gardening in Tune With Nature” on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Library, 48 Gorham Road. They will welcome Reeser Manley and Marjorie Peronto, authors of the newly released book, The New England Gardener’s Year. The program will focus on major aspects of the book, including how to create a healthy ecosystem in your garden and ways to attract pollinators and beneficial insects.

Reeser Manley has gardened in South Carolina, Washington state (while earning a Ph.D. in Horticultural Science), Massachusetts, and for the last 12 years, in Maine. He also writes a weekly gardening column for the Bangor Daily News, now in its eighth year. He taught horticulture at University of Massachusetts, Amherst and University of Maine, Orono.

Marjorie Peronto, a Professor for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, has been teaching courses in pruning, food production, and ecological landscaping in Hancock and Washington Counties for 22 years. She is a statewide resource on native and invasive plants of the Northeast, and she oversees the downeast region’s Master Gardener Volunteers program. Marjorie has also developed nationally recognized School Gardening courses for teachers.

The event is free to attend, and refreshments will be served. Copies of The New England Gardener’s Year, published by Tilbury House, will be available for purchase and signing.
