'Dogs beat Bowie, 5-4 in 10-innings

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (22-41) scored two unearned runs in the 10th inning and held on for a 5-4 win over the Bowie Baysox (27-37) on Tuesday night in the series opener at Prince George's Stadium. The Sea Dogs earned their first win of the season over Bowie, and improved to 3-3 in extra-innings.


Tied at three in the 10th, Portland scored two runs off losing pitcher Jimmy Yacabonis (1-2). With one out, Rainel Rosario reached on a throwing error by SS Adrian Marin, but on the play, 1B Joey Terdoslavich committed a throwing error at third base - enabling the go-ahead run to score. Wendell Rijo added a two-out, pinch-hit RBI single.


Austin Maddox (1-0) earned his first Double-A win, working two scoreless with a walk and three
strikeouts.


Chandler Shepherd entered the game with the bases-loaded and one out in the 10th inning and Portland leading 5-3. Jeff Kemp drew a walk, ending a streak of 17 batters in a row retired by Shepherd. The righty settled down and fanned Glynn Davis and retired Julio Borbon to earn his 5th save of the year.


The Sea Dogs took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning on Andrew Benintendi's two-run homer. Benintendi finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Bowie took a 3-2 lead in their half of the sixth on Henry Urruita's three-run homer off Teddy Stankiewicz (6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO).


The series continues tomorrow night, first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM. Kevin McAvoy (3-2, 6.99) takes the mound for Portland against Brandon Barker (2-0, 4.24) of Bowie.
