BANGOR, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's volleyball fell to
Colby-Sawyer College 3-1 and defeated Husson University 3-2 on Saturday
afternoon in North Atlantic Conference action.
Colby-Sawyer 3 – Maine Maritime 1 (25-18, 25-12, 22-25, 25-22,)
The Chargers led the match 2-0, but the Mariners fought back in the third set, led by a pair of aces from Molly Marcotte (Woonsocket, R.I.), Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) and Gillian O'Neal
(Burbank, Calif.) to win the set 25-22. The Mariners led for most of
the fourth set, but the Chargers outscored the Mariners 7-3 late in the
set to take the 25-22 victory.
O'Neal led the Mariners with a game-high 18 kills and 14 digs to grab the double-double and added three aces. Jessica Menges (Old Forge, N.Y.) also added 14 digs and tallied three blocks. Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) grabbed 22 assists, 12 digs and a kil, while Clark recorded 10 digs, five kills and three aces.
Lexi Strong led all players with 22 digs for Colby-Saywer, while
Gabrielle Rodriguez and Kelsey Sullivan added nine kills each, and
Sullivan recorded a game-high five aces.
Maine Maritime 3 – Husson 2 (25-13, 25-13, 22-25, 22-25, 15-13)
The Mariners cruised to a 2-0 lead, but the Eagles came back to tie things up at 2-2, sending the match into the fifth set.
Clark recorded a career-high 21 digs, six service aces, five kills
and two blocks. O'Neal lead all players with 19 kills, while adding nine
digs and three aces. Marcotte grabbed 14 digs, two kills and an ace.
Spaulding tallied 31 assists, 11 digs and two kills, while Alex McClure (Iron Station, N.C.) and Menges added 10 digs each.
Sarah Wilson led the Eagles with 16 digs and Nia Arranaga recorded a
team-high seven kills. Marissa Johnson had 23 assists, seven digs, and
six aces.
Maine Maritime has now defeated Husson in seven-straight matches,
including a 3-0 win earlier this season in non-conference action.
The Mariners are now 12-10 overall and 3-1 in NAC play, and will
return to Smith Gym to host Maine-Presque Isle for a non-conference
double-header on Wednesday, October 21 starting at 5:30 p.m.
