Damarisctta, Maine - Lincoln County Community Theater (LCCT), the resident theater company of Damariscotta’s Lincoln Theater, continues its Sundays Without Scenery series with two performances of the Tony-Award winning musical, Grey Gardens on Sunday April 19 at 2 pm and 7 pm.
Grey Gardens, under the direction of Aaron Robinson, is based on the 1975 documentary of the same title about the lives of Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale ("Big Edie") and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale ("Little Edie") by Albert and David Maysles. The Beales were Jacqueline Kennedy's aunt and cousin, respectively. Set at Grey Gardens, the Bouvier's mansion in East Hampton, New York, the musical tracks the progression of the two women's lives from their original status as rich and socially polished aristocrats to their eventual largely isolated existence in a home overrun by cats and cited for repeated health code violations. However, its more central purpose is to untangle the complicated dynamics of their dysfunctional mother/daughter relationship. LCCT is pleased to present this production as a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the acclaimed film and in honor and memory of Al Maysles, who recently passed away.
The company, headed up by local favorites Nancy Durgin and Suzanne Rankin, also includes Andrew Fenniman, Stephen Wallace, Kristen Robinson, Kyle Aaron, Tom Handel, Tyson Bailey, Katherine Tolley and Kayleigh Tolley.
Tickets, which will be available at the door only, are $10/$8 for Lincoln Theater Members, $6 for Youth 18 and under. Additional information can be found by visiting the theater’s website, atthelincoln.org, or by calling the theater at 563-3424. Lincoln Theater is located at 2 Theater Street in downtown Damariscotta.
Sundays without Scenery presents a live reading of a contemporary play, which may or may not go on to become a full scale production at the theater. The actors will have rehearsed, there will be pictures to set the scene, and the audience’s imagination will fill in the voids as they listen and engage with the written words. Please come and experience this unique opportunity to engage with this extraordinary musical.
