Two days of events planned on Eastern Promenade
Portland, Maine - The Friends of the Eastern Promenade and the City of Portland will celebrate the bicentennial of Fort Allen this Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20 with a series of events. On Friday, a symposium at the Maine Jewish Museum will discuss the War of 1812 in Maine, and its impact on Portland, and include a presentation by the landscape architect who researched and designed the Fort Allen Park restoration. On Saturday, a series of events are scheduled to celebrate the bicentennial, including a wreath laying ceremony at 10:00 AM at the War of 1812 Memorial followed by a parade at 10:15 AM that will start at the War of 1812 Memorial and proceed along the Eastern Promenade to Fort Allen. Former Governor and Munjoy Hill resident Joe Brennan will serve as the Grand Marshall.
At 11:00 AM on Saturday, a number of dignitaries will gather to offer formal remarks, including
Governor Paul LePage; Mayor Michael Brennan; Brigadier General James Campbell, Adjutant General of the Maine Army National Guard; Captain Brian Gilda, Commander, United States Coast Guard, Northern New England; Historian Herb Adams; Hilary Bassett, Executive Director, Greater Portland Landmarks; Martha Lyon, Landscape Architect; and Dan Haley, Jr., George Campbell, and Diane Davison all of the Friends of Eastern Promenade.
Music and 1800’s themed activities for all ages will follow the speaking program and run from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM. *See attached full schedule of events.
There are a number of street closures associated with the events on Saturday:
· For the Parade, Eastern Prom (from Walnut Street to Fort Allen Park / O'Brion Street) will be closed to traffic from 10:00 AM - 10:45 AM.
· For the festivities at Fort Allen Park, the Eastern Prom (from Wilson Street to O'Brion Street) will be closed to traffic from 10:30 AM - 2:30 PM.
· Access to Cutter Street during this time will be limited to boaters and kayakers.
