Longest win streak since 2006 for Portland, 14th shutout tossed on the season
Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (85-50) scored early and got another great outing from their starter and downed the Reading Fightin Phils (59-76) 3-0 Monday night at Hadlock Field. The win marks the 10th in a row for the Sea Dogs for the first time since 2006.Portland wasted no time and picked up the bats right where they left off on Sunday and plated a two runs across the first two innings against Severino Gonzalez.
Shannon Wilkerson began the ballgame with a single to left and Mike Miller followed with a double to the right-centerfield gap, plating the runner from first and giving the 'Dogs the 1-0 lead, two batters into the game. In the second, David Chester crushed a 1-0 pitch from the righty to dead center for a solo homer, his seventh of the year, and Portland doubled their lead to 2-0.
Justin Haley was on the other side of the hill for Portland in his fifth Double-A start. The righty walked the
leadoff man, but retired the next four in order and was helped out by his defense with web gems from both Sean Coyle and Heiker Meneses.
Carson Blair and Stefan Welch had doubles in the fourth and upped the lead to 3-0, with Welch driving home the catcher and picking up his 48th RBI on the season.
From there, both starters would cruise through six innings. Haley (2-2) finished six scoreless allowing four hits; he walked one, hit one, and struck out five. The start was a quality start, something Haley has accomplished in all five of his outings.
Gonzalez (9-13) gave up the three runs on six hits over the six frames; he walked one and hit three. Kyle Simon took over and polished off the 'Dogs over the final two innings.
Wilfredo Boscan was the first out of the Portland 'pen and the righty tossed two scoreless. He was backed up in the ninth by Noe Ramirez who needed just seven pitches to lock down his 16th save of the season, tops in the Red Sox organization. The three scoreless from the two relievers extended the streak to 28-consecutive innings without a run given up by the bullpen staff.
