Promoting Community Health and Safety in the Munjoy Hill Neighborhood
Portland, Maine - Healthy Portland, a Program of the City of Portland’s Health and Human Services Department, Public Health Division and a local Healthy Maine Partnership, will host a neighborhood block party on August 22, 2014 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The free event, called “Health on the Hill”, will showcase Healthy Portland’s numerous free community health promotion offerings, as well as the efforts of community partners who share similar goals of promoting healthy, active ways of life.
Healthy Portland is collaborating with Friends of the Eastern Promenade, Walking School Bus, Rosemont Market and Bakery, Portland Fire Department, Garbage to Garden, Portland Paddle, Portland Gear Hub, and Portland Recreation to create a fun, educational and interactive event for the residents and visitors of Munjoy Hill. Offerings will include bagged lunches for sale by Rosemont Market featuring local foods, as well as free resources and activities including information on smoke-free homes and lead poisoning prevention, interactive physical activity demonstrations and 5210 Let’s Go!, hands-only CPR with the Portland Fire Department, healthy food samples provided by registered dieticians, safe medication storage and disposal, composting demonstrations and resources for opportunities to be physically active in your community.
Amanda Hutchins, Community Health Promotion Specialist for Healthy Portland, says that she and her
coworkers hope to create a fun, educational and interactive event for the residents and visitors of Munjoy Hill that highlights the benefits of physical activity, eating nutritious foods, maintaining healthy homes, and promoting community health and safety while emphasizing the importance of healthy communities.
“Health on the Hill” block party will take place on Friday August 22, 2014 from 11:00am – 2:00 pm within a one block radius along Congress Street from Atlantic Street to Merrill Street. This section of Congress Street will be temporarily closed to traffic during this time.
Healthy Portland is one of Maine’s 27 Healthy Maine Partnerships, a collaborative effort of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Maine Office of Substance Abuse, and the Maine Department of Education.
