Tuesday Talk at CMCA

Rockport, Maine - The next Tuesday Talk at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art will be a slide talk and conversation in the galleries with artist Elizabeth Fox and CMCA director Suzette McAvoy. It will be held on September 2 at 5:30 p.m., in conjunction with Fox's exhibition Played to Win. Admission to the talk is free. 

In Fox's new series of paintings, everything is not as it first appears. With their muted color palette and deceptively straightforward style, her tautly rendered mini-dramas are rich with nuance and biting social commentary. In a review of Played to Win in the Portland Press Herald, art critic Daniel Kany calls her paintings "smart, savvy, and slick." The show has "a massive impact," Kany wrote, and he names one painting,Apply Before Entering, as his "favorite work anywhere of 2014." 

A resident of Standish, Maine, Fox has exhibited her work widely, including in New York City, New Orleans, Miami, Washington, D.C., Houston, and the Netherlands. Played to Win, along with exhibitions of work by Tom Burckhardt, Betsy Eby, and Ron Leax, will be on view at CMCA through September 20.
