PORTLAND, Maine – The Urban Runoff 5K and Green Neighbor Family Fest will be held this Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Deering High School in Portland. The 5K race starts at 9:00 AM and the Family Fest goes from 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM. The family festival is free and will feature live entertainment, face painting, food trucks and activities for kids. Both events serve the dual purpose of raising awareness of stormwater pollution and funds for clean water education programs in the greater Portland and Saco areas.
The race leads into Green Neighbor Family Fest, which is located on the front lawn of Deering High. The festival also serves as the annual kick-off event for the City of Portland’s Greener Neighborhoods Cleaner Streams program. This City-funded program aims to clean up Capisic Brook by educating Portland residents about maintaining a beautiful lawn without weed and bug killers and reducing the use of fertilizer. Each year since the inaugural festival in 2012, the event has attracted 750-1000 attendees from Portland and surrounding communities.
The events are organized by the Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District to satisfy a Clean Water Act permit requirement on behalf of the 14 municipalities that make up the Interlocal Stormwater Working Group, which includes the City of Portland.
