“Night at the Opera” on Peaks Island

Tuesday, April 8th at 8:00pm
Peaks Island Community Room
Portland, Maine - Join the Peaks Island Branch Library for a presentation and performance by composer Daniel Sonenberg.  Sonenberg will talk about his experience completing the orchestration for his opera, The Summer King, while living on Peaks Island. He will demonstrate selections from the opera, both on piano and with live recordings, and also discuss some of the broader issues surrounding creating this work about the great Negro League baseball player Josh Gibson. The opera itself will be premiered in an unstaged concert performance on May 8, at Merrill Auditorium, at 7:30pm, in a co-production by Portland Ovations and the University of Southern Maine. This performance is co-sponsored by the Peaks Island Branch Library and the Peaks Island Music Association.

Daniel Sonenberg is the composer of The Summer King - An Opera in Two Acts on the Life of Josh Gibson - and numerous other works of chamber, larger ensemble, and vocal music. He lives in Portland, Maine, and is Associate Professor and Resident Composer at the University of Southern Maine.
