Unity College President to Speak at Two Portland Events on November 13th

Unity, Maine - On Tuesday, November 13th, Unity College President Stephen Mulkey will speak at the Glickman Family Library at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in Portland as part of the L.L. Bean / Lee Surace Colloquium Series.  His presentation is entitled "Crisis and Opportunity in the Environmental Century--Inspiring a Generation of Greatness.”
The presentation is slated to begin at 4:45 p.m. in the Events Room on the 7th Floor of Glickman Library.  The event is free and open to the general public.  Complimentary refreshments will be provided by sponsor L.L. Bean.  The Glickman Family Library is located at 314 Forest Avenue, Portland.
Mulkey’s USM appearance will be the first of two in Portland on November 13th.  After his appearance at USM, Mulkey will join author and environmental activist Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org, on stage at the State Theatre, 609 Congress Street in Portland.  The State Theatre event is part of 350.org’s road trip to raise awareness and move the world into the next phase of the climate change movement.

From the 350.org web site: “It’s simple math: we can burn 565 more gigatons of carbon dioxide and stay below 2°C of warming — anything more than that risks catastrophe for life on earth, The only problem? Fossil fuel corporations now have 2,795 gigatons in their reserves, five times the safe amount. And they’re planning to burn it all — unless we rise up to stop them.”
During the month of November, Bill McKibben and 350.org are on the road to build the movement that will change the terrifying math of the climate crisis.

A scientist with extensive research, teaching and administration experience, Mulkey has re-imagined a new approach for educating students to meet the significant ecological challenges of the 21st Century.  This approach, called Sustainability Science, is the leading-edge of environmental education in the United States.  Under Mulkey’s leadership Unity College developed a curricular focus on Sustainability Science.  It is first college in the United States to do so.
Unity College is a small private college in rural Maine that provides dedicated, engaged students with a liberal arts education that emphasizes the environment and natural resources. Unity College graduates are prepared to be environmental stewards, effective leaders, and responsible citizens through active learning experiences within a supportive community.
