Roadway and Intersection Improvements on Route 4 in Auburn

AUBURN - The Maine Department of Transportation is making roadway and intersection improvements along part of Route 4 in Auburn. The work area begins just south of Oak Hill Road and continues northerly for approximately half a mile, including intersections with Oak Hill Road, Lillian Street, Turner Street, Martin Street, Fair Street, and the public boat launch. Work started on May 16th and is scheduled to continue through June 2023. This will be day work. Work may also be done on Saturdays. During construction, drivers may encounter lane restrictions. The contractor on this project is Pratt & Sons, Inc. of Minot. The contract amount is $3,427,844.

HS Soccer: Camden Hills Girls Win, Boys Tie

Rockport, Auburn, Maine - In high school soccer action for Camden Hills resulted a win for the girls and a tie for the boys.


The girl's soccer team won their 8th game against Edward Little High School of Auburn, Maine on Friday, September 25th, 2015 by a score of 3-1.


Boy's soccer team tied their game 0-0 as they traveled to Edward Little.

Governor to Hold Third Town Hall in Auburn on Wednesday

Auburn, Maine - On Wednesday, Governor Paul R. LePage will visit Androscoggin County for a town hall meeting to answer questions about his comprehensive tax reform and relief plan. This is the third town hall of several to be held across the State.

Edward Little High School in Auburn will host the town hall from 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, which is free and open to the public. Edward Little High School High School is located at 77 Harris Street, Auburn.

“It’s important for the people of Maine to understand how this tax reform plan will help them and our economy as a whole,” said Governor LePage. “My plan puts $300 million back into people’s pockets, which will help us bring prosperity to our hardworking Mainers and there is much more it aims to do to make our great state prosperous. I encourage you to join us in Auburn to learn more and ask your questions.”

Ostrander joins Minot Avenue Family Medicine

Auburn, Maine - James R. Ostrander, D.O., a family medicine physician, has been appointed to the Central Maine Medical Center Medical Staff. He is practicing at Minot Avenue Family Medicine in Auburn.

Ostrander most recently worked for eight years as a family medicine physician at Winthrop Family Practice in Winthrop. For the past seven years he also served as medical director for Heritage Rehabilitation and Living Center in Winthrop, a facility that provides geriatric and long-term care. His experience includes two years as a family medicine physician at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, and some 25 years as a paramedic and firefighter on Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Ostrander earned his doctor of osteopathy from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford. He completed his residency training at the Central Maine Medical Center Family Medicine Residency in Lewiston.

Ostrander holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Massachusetts in Boston, an associate degree in nursing from Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable, Mass., and a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Amherst College in Amherst, Mass. He was a brother in the Community of Jesus in Orleans, Mass., for 27 years.

He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Missing Juvenile Runaway Investigation

Auburn, Maine - Kiarra A. Bruce, a 14 year old female, was reported missing from her father’s house in Auburn on 8/19/2014.  Her father believes that she left home between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. on 8/18.  She was last seen wearing cut off jean shorts and a grey shirt – she was not believed to be wearing any jewelry when she left.

Kiarra has run away in the past; however, she has always been located shortly after she went missing. While she is not believed to be endangered or to have been abducted, there are no other leads as to Miss Bruce’s current whereabouts. The Auburn Police Department has no information that leads it to believe that Kiara has left the L/A area.  She is known to frequent the Public Library and Bonney Park in Auburn as well as Kennedy Park in Lewiston.

Kiarra Bruce is further described as a 5 foot tall, Caucasian female with blonde hair and blue eyes.  Two current photos are included below.

Maine Manufacturer to Expand Operations; Will Add Nearly 140 New Jobs

Auburn, Maine - Pioneer Plastics Corporation, a subsidiary of Panolam Industries International, an Auburn-based company engaged in the manufacturing of high-pressure decorative laminates (HPL), will see its operations grow in Maine as a result of Panolam closing its manufacturing operations in South Carolina and moving the production to Maine. The company's anticipated investment of more than $1.7 million is expected to lead to the creation of nearly 140 new direct jobs over the next two years.

Androscoggin County Job Fair in Auburn on April 4

**More than 60 employers will be hiring**
Auburn, Maine - The 11th Annual Androscoggin County Job Fair will be held Friday, April 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at Central Maine Community College, 1250 Turner Street, Auburn.

"Maine's employers are hiring; our state gained 6,500 jobs in 2013 and we are starting April with about 7,000 jobs on Maine's Job Bank," said Governor Paul R. LePage. "2014 promises continued growth with several job fairs scheduled around the state. Come out, meet employers and learn what Androscoggin County and the surrounding area has to offer."

Apron Tea set for April 6 at Woman's Literary Union

APRON TEA – Dotti Adams (pictured) and her sister, Norma Salway, will host "The History of Vintage Aprons", a display set for April 6 at 2 p.m. at the Woman's Literary Union, 19 Elm Street, Auburn. Auburn Police Issues ***TRAFFIC/WEATHER ADVISORY***

Auburn, Maine - The Auburn police department has issued a Traffic/Weather Advisory for heavy rain followed by a serious drop in temperatures.

Statement:
Heavy rain is forecasted in this area for this afternoon followed by a severe cold front that will send temperatures plummeting below the freezing mark by 5pm. This is going to create very treacherous traveling conditions tonight. Clogged storm drains have led to standing water on some of our roads. We are asking people to stay off the roads tonight. Public Works is working hard to keep the roads safe and storm drains clear, but Mother Nature simply is not cooperating. Please stay off the roads tonight and Public Works will have them ready for your morning commute tomorrow. 

Lewiston native returns to practice medicine in Auburn‏

Auburn, Maine - Gerald G. Lachance, D.O., a family medicine physician, has been appointed to the Central Maine Medical Center Medical Staff. He is practicing at Minot Avenue Family Medicine in Auburn

A Lewiston native, Lachance returned to Maine recently after practicing in Florida for more than 10 years. Prior to beginning his work in the greater Lewiston-Auburn area, he practiced at Northwest Florida PrimaryCare in Destin, Fla. His work in Florida included nearly three years at Healthpoint Medical Group in Panama City. He also worked for nearly three years with Primecare of Northwest Florida, also in Panama City, where he served as medical director.

A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington, he earned his medical degree at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, where he was elected to the Psi Sigma Alpha National Scholastic Osteopathic Honor Society.

He completed residency training at the Central Maine Medical Center Family Medicine Residency in Lewiston.

Following his graduation from residency training, he practiced for three years with the U.S. Air Force 325th Medical Group, which was attached to the 325th Fighter Wing at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Fla. During his time in the Air Force, Lachance was recognized with a Company Grade Clinical Excellence Award and U.S. Air Force Meritorious Service Medal.

He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

November 12th obesity program‏

Auburn, Maine - “The Obesity Epidemic” is the topic of a “Mini-Medical School” educational program set for November 12 in Auburn.

Bariatric surgeon Jamie Loggins, M.D., will examine the link between obesity and cancer, the cost of obesity, and cardiometabolic issues, as well as treatment and prevention.

His presentation is the last in a series of five “Mini-Med” educational programs sponsored by Central Maine Medical Center.

Loggins, a general surgeon who specializes in bariatric surgery, is medical director of Central Maine Bariatric Surgery, a Central Maine Medical Group surgical practice. He is also chief of surgery at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

A graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill., Loggins earned his medical degree at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He completed a fellowship in minimally invasive and robotic surgery at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif.

Central Maine Bariatric Surgery is accredited as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

The program is open free of charge to the community. A background in science or medicine is not necessary to attend.

The program will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Auburn Public Library.

Advocate for Maine Entrepreneurship to Speak at Library Event

Auburn, Maine - Auburn Public Library will welcome one of Maine’s top advocates for entrepreneurship as the keynote speaker at its Entrepreneurs’ Extravaganza, on Tuesday, June 26.

Don Gooding, Executive Director of the Maine Center for Entrepreneurial Development, is also Vice Chair of the Maine Angels and teaches Innovation Engineering at USM. Gooding will be sharing his vision for entrepreneurship in Maine and his role with MCED, an organization committed to fostering growth and self-sufficiency among the state’s most promising  start-ups.

A former telecommunications market analyst and venture capitalist for fifteen years, Gooding founded and ran a global specialty music business for sixteen years, and has been an angel investor since the late 1990s. As a member of Maine Angels he has invested in early stage technology companies, including Ocean Renewable Power Company, Emergent Music, Axon Labs, Neuroptix and IW Financial.

While Research Partner for Accel Partners (1986-1996), Gooding investigated new telecom and networking markets, finding and evaluating new investment opportunities. He has authored a monthly column in Communications Week, was co-chair of the annual Accel/Stanford Center for Telecommunications Symposium, and was the first webmaster in the venture capital industry. He worked closely with companies such as UUNET, Teleos, Clear Communications and PictureTel.

He received his B.A. from Yale University cum laude with distinction in Economics in 1981, concentrating on the economics of data transmission.

Summer Reading Kickoff Features Magic and Music


Auburn, Maine - Auburn Public Library will host a kickoff event for its summer reading program “Dream Big - Read!” on June 18, starting at 4:30pm, at the library. This event is for all ages, and features music, magic, and a scavenger hunt to get your summer dreams  off to a great start. Events are free and open to all ages.

The event begins with music by Cinder Conk.  Cinder Conk, a Balkan duo, weaves frenzied accordion riffs (Matthew Schreiber) with warm double bass counterpoint (Xar Adelberg) to create a sound that's energetic, gripping, winsome and haunting.

At 6pm, there will be a magic show by “The Amazing Lou”, where adults will become children and children become awestruck as he performs his visual wizardry.

Teens will have special crafts, gaming and food on the second floor during the event.

The “Summer Dream” library-wide scavenger hunt will take place from  4:30-7PM, with a prize drawing for all who successfully solve the clues.

Children and Teens will also have an opportunity to register for the summer reading program.  Children will keep a log of their summer reading and receive small incentives along the way.  Teens who participate will receive incentives and will be entered in a grand prize drawing for a new laptop or pizza party for the teen plus ten friends.  Adults will be asked to submit brief reviews of books which will serve as entries for a weekly drawing for gift certificates to local businesses. We will have special events to help you “Dream Big” throughout the summer, including the Northern Stars Mobile Planetarium.

Summer reading sponsors include the Maine Cycling Club, Bangor Savings Bank, and Oxford Networks.

Auburn, Maine - An Entrepreneurs’ Extravaganza, designed to inform and inspire local entrepreneurs and small business owners, will be held at the Auburn Public Library on Tuesday, June 26 from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Recognizing that entrepreneurship and small businesses are key drivers of economic growth and essential to the local economy, the Auburn Public Library and the City of Auburn’s Economic Development Office will host the event. The evening will cap recent efforts to increase business intelligence resources at the Library and to improve information sharing among agencies serving the small business community.

The event’s focus will be on introducing free resources available to entrepreneurs and small business owners and will include workshops on how to finance and market. Additionally, Don Gooding, director of the Maine Center for Entrepreneurial Development, will be sharing his vision for entrepreneurship in Maine. MCED is an organization committed to fostering growth and self-sufficiency among the state’s most promising, innovative start-ups.

The evening will kick off with light refreshments and an opportunity to network and to meet local resource providers from SCORE, Women, Work, & Community, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service, U.S. Rural Development, USM’s Center for Entrepreneurship, the Maine Patent Program, CEI/SmartStart, and others offering support and services.
