The Owls Head Transportation Museum will be exhibiting a 1907 Renault Vanderbilt racer on Sunday, September 21 at The Boston Cup. Billed as Boston’s premiere car show, The Boston Cup is held annually on The Boston Common. This marks the second consecutive appearance of an OHTM collection piece at this invitational event.
The Boston Cup features 100 collector cars and in 2014 will also feature race cars and electric vehicles. The Renault Vanderbilt is among the most significant cars in the OHTM collection and was produced by Renault at the encouragement of Willie K. Vanderbilt. Modeled after the highly-successful grand prix race cars of the 1906-1907 season, the Vanderbilt racer is a factory-built, slightly smaller version of those famous vehicles.
As many as 15 Renault Vanderbilt racers were produced in 1907 and Willie K. Vanderbilt and his comrades enjoyed racing the speedy vehicles around the Long Island countryside. Mr. Vanderbilt’s high-speed hijinks are rumored to have been the catalyst forcing authorities to implement speed limits on Long Island.
In 2013 The Owls Head Transportation Museum was invited to participate in the Massachusetts-built class of The Boston Cup. OHTM exhibited their 1929 Springfield Rolls-Royce Phantom Derby Tourer, a stunning car once owned by silent screen star Clara Bow.
The Boston Cup runs from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on The Boston Common. Admission is free to the public however a select number of VIP tickets are sold and can be purchased online at thebostoncup.com or onsite at the show.
