Blue Hill, Maine - Mycologist and Blue Hill Heritage Trust (BHHT) volunteer David Porter will offer two programs about mushrooms as part of this fall’s Great Maine Outdoor Weekend events.
A Mushroom Identification Workshop will be held Saturday, September 27 from 1-4 pm at BHHT’s Carleton House in Blue Hill. Using freshly collected specimens, you will learn the secrets of successful mushroom identification. This includes basic mushroom vocabulary, what features to look for, how to use an identification key, and which field guides and internet sites are best for this area. Participants may bring their own collections for identification. This BHHT members-only workshop is limited to 14 participants. Pre-registration is required. Porter will also lead a Fall Mushrooms Walk & Talk on Sunday, September 28 from 1-3 pm at Greenbie Natural Area in Castine. On the walk along the Greenbie trail, participants will observe numerous fall mushrooms, cover the basics of mushroom identification, and become aware of the underground activities of mushrooms and other fungi and how they contribute to the ecology of the Maine forest. Call 374-5118 to pre-register and for directions. Space is limited, and pre-registration is required.
