While the theme of this popular show is custom vehicles, exhibitors arriving in pre-1994 vehicles
and members of all organized auto clubs receive free admission at this show and all other Museum (non-auction) events. Exhibitor gates open at 8 a.m. and visitor gates open at 9 a.m., the show runs until 3 p.m. each day.
In addition to an assortment of hot rods, custom vehicles and muscle cars, an array of family activities will include vehicle demonstrations, dirt track racers, free Model T rides and (weather permitting) antique aeroplane demonstrations. Remember, we fly early, so try to get to the Museum in the morning to see our planes in action!
Representatives from the Wicked Good Vintage Racing Association will be on hand with an array of fantastic vintage stock cars, t-shirts and information. The Museum is pleased to welcome back the National Street Rod Association; they will once again be conducting free safety inspections for any exhibitor who wishes to have their vehicle inspected. In 2013 than 50 vehicles passed through the NSRA inspection bay in just two days!
Also special to the Rod & Custom Cruise-In is the introduction of the Hagerty Youth Judging program. The Museum is pleased to partner with Hagerty to introduce this successful program to our event. Founded in 2007 as part of the Hagerty Youth Advocacy Program, the Youth Judging Program is now implemented at more than 70 classic car and boat shows throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The program is designed for auto enthusiasts ages eight to 14 and provides a guided judging experience focused on encouraging young judges to interact with car owners and learn fun facts and history about each car. This fun program will be offered on a first come, first served basis and registration is limited to 15 participants each day of the show. Signup will be offered on site until 11 a.m., judging will be 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and results will be announced at 1 p.m.
Antique aeroplane demonstrations will commence weather permitting and planes planned for demonstration include our 1930 Curtiss-Wright Travel Air D-4000 Speedwing , our 1917 SPAD in its new checkerboard paint scheme, our 1933 Waco, our 1918 Standard J-1 and our beloved 1917 Fokker DR.I triplane (aka the Red Baron). Open flightline is scheduled on each afternoon during the show and provides an opportunity for visitors to see, hear and experience the planes close up and visit with our pilots.
We fly early so plan to visit in the morning to see the antique aeroplane show.
Ground Vehicle Conservator Warren Kincaid said a number of museum collection vehicles will be demonstrated and may include our 1932 Ford Cragar Racer, 1886 Benz replica, 1908 Overland Roadster, 1933 Pierce Arrow and many more. Several vehicles that have never previously been demonstrated will be run as part of the Rod and Custom Cruise-in.
Raffle tickets are on sale for a 1951 MG TD, this raffle is a special promotion in 2014 and all proceeds from ticket sales will benefit museum programs. Tickets are $100 each and can be purchased online or on site at the museum where the grand prize car is on display, only 500 will be sold. The winner will be selected on August 23 at the museum’s inaugural Barnstormers Ball fundraising gala. Tickets to the Barnstormers Ball can also be purchased online or at the museum.
Vehicles will be exhibited on the Museum’s Runway 17, and the Museum will be open so that visitors can tour the collection and exhibits, including our newest exhibit Faster: The Quest for Speed (opening June 12) which highlights the rich history of motor vehicle racing in New England and beyond. Highlights of the exhibition include a Michael Schumacher driven Ferrari F2002 Formula 1 car and the world’s second-oldest Duesenberg, a 1915 “Benedict Special” racer.
Admission is $16 for adults, and children under 18 are admitted to the Museum and show free of charge. Delicious refreshments including sandwiches, burgers, salads, soups and lobster rolls catered by French & Brawn Catering and Market Place will be available for purchase at the Museum’s Caboose Café during both days of the show. No pets are allowed in the Museum or on show grounds.
Any visitor who renews their membership or purchases a new membership on the day of an event is entered in a drawing for a ride in the Museum’s 1941 Stearman Biplane. One winner is drawn at noon and one at 3:00 p.m. each day of the event.
