A Merryspring tradition for over 20 years, Rose Day will begin outdoors at the Merryspring Hexagon, where Jenks will speak about the harsh winter of 2014 and its impact on roses. Along with tips on how to select winter-hardy roses, the talk will also cover how to get them through Maine’s long winters. An open session on rose culture will immediately follow the presentation.
Guests will then have an opportunity to view the Merryspring Rose garden and ask questions about the
varieties showing their blooms. After a brief break, Jenks will then lead a motor-tour of three renowned Camden-area rose gardens. Car-pooling is encouraged among guests.
This is an outdoor program, so guests are advised to wear weather-appropriate clothing. In the event of rain, Jenks’ lecture will be moved indoors. Due to the long nature of this program, guests are also encouraged to bring a bagged lunch.
Jenks is a gardener, musician, and teacher. Growing roses since he was a child, Glenn currently takes care of the Rose Garden at Merryspring and also sits on the board of trustees as Vice President. He and his wife Faith make their home in Camden.
This presentation is part of the Spring Talk Series at Merryspring, which is being sponsored by The First. Admission to the Tuesday Talks is free to Merryspring members and children, with a nominal $5 fee for non-members.
