Camden Public Library Events June 26 through July 10

Thursday, June 26

Author and photographer Helen Peppe will present her new book, Pigs Can’t Swim: A Memoir, an outrageous, hilarious, and touching memoir by the youngest of nine children on a hardscrabble, beyond-eccentric Maine family farm. Camden Public Library, 7:00 pm.


Friday, June 27

Free walking tour of Camden, 4:00 pm, hosted by the Camden Public Library and the Downtown Business Group, begins at library and ends at Camden Opera House. Tours last an hour; reservations are encouraged, please call the library at 236-3440.


Saturday, June 28

“Closing reception” for Artist of the Month Lou Schellenberg, 2:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. Schellenberg’s paintings are large, brilliant oils of sunlit scenes from Pennsylvania, Maine, and Nova Scotia.


Tuesday, July 1

Opening reception for “Maine: Island Time” with artist Michael Weymouth and author Elizabeth Garber, 6:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. The paintings with accompanying poetry will be on display through the month of July.


Monday, July 7

Dr. Yossi Leshem, Israel’s best-known ornithologist and environmental educator, will give a talk at the Camden Public Library at 4:00 pm, on “Migrating Birds Know No Boundaries,” co-hosted by Mid-Coast Audubon Society, Coastal Senior College, and Congregation Adas Yoshuron of Rockland.

“Arsenic and Old Lace” (1944; 118 min.) free Movie in the Park, 8:30 pm at the Camden Amphitheatre, sponsored by the Camden Public Library and Camden National Bank. Bring blankets or chairs for seating. In the case of rain, the movie will be shown indoors.


Tuesday, July 8

Camden Philosophical Society Reading Group regular meeting, 4:00 at the Camden Public Library. This month’s reading is from ‘The Archaeology of Knowledge’ by Michel Foucault. The group discussion will focus on Part I: The Introduction, Part II: Discursive Strategies, and Part V: Conclusion. All are welcome.

Marjorie Agosín, author of I Lived on Butterfly Hill,  was raised in Chile and moved to the US to escape the horrors of the Pinochet takeover. The book is the story of young Celeste, whose safe, peaceful, and idyllic life is upended by unrest that sweeps Chile. Agosín will talk about her life and the events in Chile, her move to Maine, and about her book, at the Camden Public Library at 7:00 pm.


Wednesday, July 9

Wednesday in the Park concert series kicks off with guitarist and singer Martin Gibson, noon, Camden Amphitheatre, sponsored by Camden Parks & Recreation and Elm Street Printing.
