Brush Control to Begin

Augusta, Maine - The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) is scheduled to brush control with herbicides in 4 of its 5 regions by the beginning of July.

Selected vegetation within the right of way will be controlled to maintain roadsides free from trees to maintain visibility of large animals, and visibility at curves, intersections, and hills.

Keeping roadsides free from unwanted vegetation also provides room to store winter snow and allows sunlight to the surface to reduce icing in winter.

The Department is also controlling weeds and grasses around guardrails and has begun to control invasive weeds that can grow to a height of 6 feet in some roadway locations to provide adequate sight distance and visibility of animals along the side of the road.
