Selva’s lecture will discuss the amazing world of lichens, including their fungal and algal composition, how to identify them, and a general overview of their biology. Along with three examples of lichen, Dr. Selva’s presentation will elaborate about the age and composition of forests can be determined based on what species of lichen and fungi are present.
Dr. Steven Stelva has taught botanical science at the University of Maine Fort Kent since 1976. Beginning in 1986, he began researching lichens and their use in assessing ecologal continuity of forests in New England and Canada. He is the author of numerous articles on the subject of old-growth forests and lichens.
This talk is part of Merryspring 's 2013 Winter Talk Series, co-sponsored by The First and the Allen Insurance and Financial. Admission is free for Merryspring members, with a nominal fee of $5 for non-members.
