Bangor, Maine - Husson University announced March 9th that its Southern Maine campus in Westbrook, Maine will be holding its first Business and Management Career Fair on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. Over 20 local companies are scheduled to participate. Husson students, alumni and the public are welcome to attend.

“We encourage our students to network, make connections and share their resumes with a variety of companies at these events,” said Charles Collins, Ed.D., executive director of Husson University - Southern Maine. “If you’re someone who’s interested in learning more about different career and internship opportunities, we hope you’ll join us. Westbrook, Maine - Individuals interested in career-focused undergraduate and graduate education will have a unique opportunity this upcoming weekend. They can be among the first ever to learn about educational opportunities at Husson University’s new Southern Maine Campus in Westbrook.

“This will be our first open house at our new location,” said Charlie Collins, executive director of Husson University’s Southern Maine campus. “Whatever goals someone might have, whether its sharpening existing skills, training for a new career or finishing a degree, we can help.”

Individuals attending the open house will have the opportunity to tour the new facility, speak with an enrollment advisor, obtain financial aid information and learn about the various classes and programs available through Husson University’s Southern Maine campus.

Husson University to Unveil New Southern Maine Campus with Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Bangor, Maine - Husson University announced today that it will showcase its new Southern Maine campus at 340 County Road in Westbrook, Maine at a grand opening ceremony on Tuesday, February 4 at 12:00 p.m.  The event, featuring a ribbon cutting, will celebrate the variety of advanced educational opportunities now available to Southern Maine area students and employers through this respected institution of higher learning.

The new three-acre Southern Maine campus has over 17,000 square feet of space, offering students both undergraduate and graduate degrees in 20 professional-oriented programs. With 15 classrooms, the renovated and modernized facility can offer more classes, to more students, than the previous location in South Portland.  This is the first time Husson University has owned property and educational facilities outside of Bangor.

“In addition to serving our current students, we look forward to serving the more  than 200,000 Maine adults who have earned some college credits but have yet to complete a degree,” said Charles P. Collins, Ed.D., Executive Director of Husson University’s Southern Maine Campus. “Degrees enhance the earning power of individuals. In addition, a more educated workforce makes our state more attractive to businesses interested in relocating. Undergraduate degree programs open to students through Husson’s Southern Maine Campus include: Accounting; Business Administration; Business and Professional Studies; Criminal Justice; Elementary Education; Hospitality Management; Paralegal Studies; and Software Development.

Graduate degree programs are also available. They include: Business Administration (MBA); Criminal Justice Administration; Human Relations; Nursing; Pastoral Counseling; and School Counseling. A certificate program in Paralegal Studies as well as an Alternative Teacher Certification program are also offered at the Southern Maine campus.

Husson University’s Southern Maine Campus offers courses in traditional classroom settings; online; and in hybrid configurations that feature a mixture of both.

BREAKING NEWS: Armed USM student barricaded in fraternity house **RESOLVED**

UPDATED 11:55pm:  USM student is now in police custody. There are no injuries and no shots were fired. Roads will be back open soon.

Gorham situation :: The situation in Gorham has safely resolved. The roadblocks will be clearing soon.

UPDATE: A male student at the University of Southern Maine is alone in a fraternity house. He is armed. No shots have been fired and there are no reports of any injuries.

The situation is under control. The Gorham Police Department is in command of the scene. 

The Sigma Nu fraternity House is located on School Street in downtown Gorham, a short distance from USM's Gorham campus.

The situation was reported at approximately 8 p.m.

UPDATE: USM spokesman says Sigma Nu fraternity member is armed & won't come out of frat house in Gorham. There are no hostages in the stand off.

Gorham, Maine - Police have a Fraternity house on the University of Maine campus surrounded. A student has barricaded himself in his room at a frat house and has threatened to hurt himself.

A dance studio, The Dance Studio of Maine and Gorham House of Pizza, is currently in lockdown. Major roads in the center of town are currently closed.

Standoff on School St just outside USM's Gorham campus. University spokesperson Bob Caswell says a member of Sigma Nu fraternity is holed up inside the frat house. Had been unruly and threatening to other members of the frat earlier in the day. No one hurt as of now.

Access to Gorham campus is limited due to an emergency situation at Main and School Streets according to USM facebook.

Southern Maine Campus of Husson University Offers New Course for Hospitality Industry Professionals

Bangor, Maine - Husson University announced today that it would begin offering HA 301 - Supervision in Hospitality Management every Thursday from 11:00 am -12:15 pm at its Southern Maine campus beginning January 23, 2014. The course is ideal for food service, tourism, travel and hotel professionals interested in enhancing their current skills or gaining the knowledge necessary to move into a supervisory role at hospitality and tourism-oriented businesses.

“Husson is committed to offering convenient, career education that leads to personal and professional success. Students can now begin their journey toward an advanced degree over a complimentary lunch. Anyone working in the hospitality industry who’s interested in becoming a better leader or growing professionally should enroll in this course,” said Charles P. Collins, Ed.D., executive director of Husson University’s Southern Maine campus.

HA 301 – Supervision in Hospitality Management provides students with an in-depth understanding of leaders’ roles and responsibilities at organizations in the hospitality and tourism sectors. Course participants develop a framework for supervision along with an increased understanding of the skills and tools needed to be an effective leader.

The course offers case study analyses assigned in class combined with projects conducted at the student’s internship or job. Topics covered in class include career planning, communication skills, conflict management, managing change, labor controls, staff development, team building, and ethics.

Supervision in Hospitality Management will feature live, classroom led instruction at Husson’s new Southern Maine facility along with interactive broadcasts from the university’s Bangor campus. Additional course content will be delivered online.

Dr. Belinda Wee, an assistant professor in the School of Business and Management at Husson University, teaches the course. Her Ph.D. is in Education with a specialization in Human Resource Development and her Master’s degree is in Human Resource and Industrial Relations.  In addition to being a scholar with extensive theoretical knowledge, Dr. Wee has significant practical experience with world-class hospitality organizations that she brings to class every day.

Wee has held a variety of senior management positions in large international organizations, primarily as a human resource practitioner.  During her tenure with Hyatt International Hotels, Vista International Hotels (Hong Kong) and Holiday Inn Worldwide (Asia Pacific), she applied and demonstrated leadership and management skills in the conceptualization, communication, oversight and execution of strategic plans. This included:

·        Designing training and development modules for implementation in hotels in China and Australia.

·        Establishing a corporate university in Beijing, China

·        Managing an international hotel’s human resource office in Asia, including the training and development needs of their properties in China, Hong Kong and Macau.

·        Overseeing the business development of a major hotel management company, including various stages of marketing hotel management contracts in Asia.
