Seeking Volunteer Candy Makers‏

Norway, Maine - The Norway Historical Society will recreate the spirit of Fletcher’s Candy Store on
Saturday November 30, 2013, the day of the annual Christmas parade. Fletcher’s Candy Store – known as the Sweetest Spot in Norway, began November 7, 1903, founded by John H. Fletcher. The store was located on Main Street in Norway for almost 60 years, and was famous for its handmade candy – especially candy canes and ribbon candy at Christmas time.


Last year’s candy store was a very successful fundraiser, and the homemade candy was amazing. If you can donate homemade candy to our “Fletcher’s” Candy Store, please email the society at norwaymehistory@gmail.com or contact us by phone at 743-7377 – please leave a message if no one is available.  Someone will return your call as soon as possible.

History of the Ordway Grove May 18‏

Norway, Maine - On Saturday, May 18 at 2:00pm the Norway Historical Society will host its first program
of the 2013 season featuring The History of The Ordway Grove. Ordway Grove is home to some of the oldest and largest white pines in Maine and features access to Pennesseewassee Lake.

The program will include presentations by John Crumpton of the Twin Town Nature Club and Merle Ring, the regional district forester of the Maine Forest Service. The program will begin in the meeting hall of the society with the history of the grove and will finish with a field trip lead by Mr. Ring exploring the grove and the well-known pine trees.

Mr. Ring and the Maine Forest Service work to ensure that the trees and forest lands like Ordway Grove will continue to provide benefits for present and future generations of Maine people.  Lite refreshments will be provided prior to the program at the society.

Annual Meeting for Members of the Norway Historical Society

Norway, Maine - The annual meeting of the members of the Norway Historical Society will be January 12, 2013 at 1:00pm in the meeting room; snow date is January 19. The Board of Trustees will present a report of the past year’s developments and activities as well as present a vision and ongoing development plans for 2013.

The agenda for the annual meeting will include an opportunity for members to ask questions and/or offer suggestions. Minor changes to the bylaws as well as officers for 2013 will be presented for approval by the members. Officers to be elected are:

President – Sue Denison
Secretary – Anita Hamilton
Treasurer – Ann Seikman

Coffee with the Curator

Norway, Maine - Norway Historical Society is sponsoring Coffee with the Curator Saturday, September 22 at 9:00am. Curator Charles Longley will present an informal program as guests sit around the table enjoying coffee and a treat. Curator Longley will provide a close-up look at some of the society’s recent acquisitions, explain research materials available as well answer questions about the society and Norway’s history.  Recent acquisitions include an original Civil War document that is very important to Norway history, shoemaker's tools used 100 years ago in a Norway shoe shop and several Noyes prints. Please join us for coffee, a treat and some very interesting artifacts and conversation.

Norway Historical Society will host Wayne Chandler


Norway, Maine - On Wednesday, June 13 at 7:00pm the Norway Historical Society will host Wayne Chandler’s presentation of the History of the Weary Club.  Chandler is the current president of The Weary Club which began in 1923 and is a unique, one of a kind institution found only in Norway, Maine. The club features a neat, white one-story building right in the center of the town and has a storied history that has spread world-wide. Membership in The Weary Club remains strong and currently includes some 3rd generation members as well as “makers and dealers in cedar shavings, social gossip, political wisdom and Yankee philosophy”. The Weary Club is a part of Norway’s rich heritage and local institution.

Norway, Maine - On Tuesday, May 29 at 7:00pm the Norway Historical Society will host Carolyn Lawson, a Civil War reenactor from Company A, 3rd Maine Regiment Volunteer Infantry. Women played major roles and provided crucial support for both sides during the Civil War. Lawson’s presentation titled  “Under the Dress, Victorian Secrets” will highlight some of the diverse and significant contributions made by women during the Civil War. Volunteers with the Maine 3rd make every effort to research the everyday dress, lives and activities of the women in the mid 1800’s.

Company A, 3rd Maine Regiment Volunteer Infantry is a nonprofit educational and living history organization dedicated to preserving the memory of Maine’s role in the American Civil War. Presentations like those given by Lawson teach what life was like for Maine women during the years 1861 – 1865. Volunteer Infantry has acquired a reputation for historical authenticity both within and outside the state.
Apart from her volunteer work with the Maine 3rd, Carolyn Lawson has a degree in Chemical Engineering and is an Assistant in Instruction at Bates College in Lewiston. She is particularly interested in structure and function relationships in biology and routinely teaches labs in Organismal Biology, Cellular and Molecular Biology and Animal Physiology.

The Norway Historical Society will also feature an exhibition of the society’s artifacts, documents and memorabilia related to the Civil War.
