Pirates start Home and Home Weekend in Hartford
Hartford, Connecticut – The Portland Pirates begin a home and home series with the Hartford Wolf Pack tonight in Hartford as they face the Wolf Pack at the XL Center. Puck drop is 7 PM for the 5th meeting between the two teams, and the second of three this week. The Pirates will host Hartford at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee tomorrow at 4 PM.
The Pirates snapped a 4 game losing skid on Thursday with a 6-4 defeat of the Worcester Sharks. Brendan Shinnimin and Tobias Rieder scored twice for the Pirates, with Andy Miele and Brett Hextall also adding goals. Miele’s goal, along with an assist in the first period, set a career high in points in a season with 55 in only 52 games. Mark Visentin earned the win in net, making 35 saves.
The Wolf Pack outlasted the Hershey Bears last night with a 2-1 shootout win. Ryan Bourque scored Hartford’s regulation goal in the third period, with Marek Hrivik and T.J. Hensick scoring in the shootout. Dov Grumet-Morris made 29 saves and stopped 4 of the 5 shootout attempts for the win.
Hartford visited the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston on Tuesday and came away with a 4-3 win. The Pirates scored 3 times in the first period, but the Wolf Pack scored twice in the second and twice in the third to take the win. Lucas Lessio, Andy Miele, and Rostislav Klesla had the Pirates goals, while Louis Domingue made 24 saves in the loss.

Hang Tough: The Pirates faced a late scare on Thursday as Worcester got within one goal, but were able to hold on for the victory. The Pirates need to get the lead early tonight and play an aggressive, heavy style in order to maintain it for the victory.

MYSTIC SEAPORT NAMES 22ND CAPTAIN OF THE CHARLES W. MORGAN

Mystic, Connecticut - Mystic Seaport named Richard “Kip” Files of Rockland, Maine, as the new captain of the 19th-century whaleship Charles W. Morgan, which will venture back to sea next summer to visit historic ports of New England celebrating the importance of America’s maritime heritage.
At the conclusion of a five-year, multi-million dollar restoration at the Museum’s Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard, Files will take the Morgan on an approximately three-month voyage from May to August 2014 in Southern New England waters.
“This is an extraordinary undertaking and it will be exciting to take this ship back to sea to discover and share what it was like to operate a wooden whaleship as they did throughout the 19th century,” Files said.
As the owner and captain of the 132-foot, three-masted schooner Victory Chimes out of Rockland, Files is no stranger to sailing large ships without an engine. He is also the primary captain of the 207-foot barque Elissa, owned and operated by the Galveston Historical Foundation and Texas Seaport Museum. Files holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master Ocean License for Inspected Passenger Vessels of up to 1,600 Gross Tons. He has been a master of traditional sailing vessels since 1978. He also served on the boards of Tall Ships America (formerly the American Sail Training Association) and the Ocean Classroom Foundation.
“There are very few people in the world with the knowledge and experience of traditional square-rigged sailing necessary to do this job. Kip is one of those people and we are confident we have found the right person to lead the ship on her 38th Voyage,” said Steve White, president of Mystic Seaport.
Files will arrive at Mystic Seaport to start work on November 11. He will be charged with hiring the Morgan’s crew and preparing and equipping her for the 38th Voyage. After a period of fitting-out and sea trials based in New London, Conn. Files will sail her to Newport, Vineyard Haven, New Bedford, and Boston. The Morgan will also venture into the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and participate in the centennial celebration of the Cape Cod Canal. The voyage will be a commemoration of the role of the sea in the history of America and an appreciation of our changing relationship with the natural world.
“For someone who has made his living with traditional vessels this is quite an honor,” Files said. “The 38th Voyage will be one of the most significant maritime events in my lifetime, and I feel privileged and humbled to be part of this historic voyage.”
As the 22nd captain of the National Historic Landmark and the last wooden whaling ship in the world, Files takes his responsibility for the well-being of the vessel and the safety of the crew very seriously.
“The most important goal is to achieve a safe voyage for the ship and all who sail on her,” Files said. “The Charles W. Morgan is an irreplaceable artifact of America’s maritime heritage and her well-being is paramount.”
At 113-feet long, the Morgan was launched in New Bedford, Mass. in 1841 and had a whaling career of 80 years and 37 voyages that spanned the far reaches of the globe. While her original cargo was whale oil and bone, now her cargo is knowledge. Commanding this American icon and presenting her to the American people as a living portal into an important chapter of our history is an honor, Files said.
Although he’s sailed in oceans across the globe for close to half a century, Files said he hasn’t yet experienced a favorite sail. However, the Morgan’s 38th Voyage is “going to be a quite the adventure,” he said.

USA Gymnastics recognizes restaurants participating in Taste of the Championships
Hartford, Connecticut - Six downtown Hartford, Conn., restaurants participated in the "Capital City's Taste of the Championships," held during the 2013 P&G Gymnastics Championships staged at the XL Center this week. Each of the six restaurants created a special, healthy entrée that was featured on the menu during P&G Gymnastics Championships week.A panel of judges visited the restaurants during a three-day span. The panel of judges varied each day and included legendary coach Bela Karolyi, 1984 Olympic speedskating gold-medalist Johann Olav Koss, Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra, 2004 Olympic all-around champion Carly Patterson, 1984 Olympic gold-medalist and USA Gymnastics Board Chairman Peter Vidmar, and USA Gymnastics President Steve Penny.
The votes are in, and below are the awards, which were announced during the final day of competition of men's gymnastics by 1984 Olympic gold-medalist Peter Vidmar, Penny and Segarra. The awards bearing an individual's name represent his/her favorite dish.

BREAKING SPORTS NEWS: Biles wins women's all-around at 2013 P&G Championships
Hartford, Connecticut - 2013 AT&T American Cup silver medalist Simone BIles of Spring, Texas/Bannon's Gymnastix, won the senior women's all-around title at the P&G Gymnastics Championships at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Biles posted an all-around total of 120.450 points, followed closely by 2012 Olympic gold-medalist Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max, at 120.250 points, and Brenna Dowell of Odessa, Mo./Great American Gymnastics Express, with 116.550 points.
Biles, who earned silver medals on all four individual events, began her competition on balance beam with a solid routine that included a flip flop, flip flop, full-twisting double back dismount for 15.000 points. On floor, she smiled and soared through a double-twisting double back, a double layout and a full-twisting double tuck for 14.950 points. In the third rotation, Biles landed a clean Amanar, scoring 15.800 points. Biles finished the meet on uneven bars, scoring 14.200 points for a routine that included a Weiler-half to Maloney combination, a piked Tkatchev and a full twisting double tuck dismount.
With four cleanly executed routines, Ross won the all-around silver medal. On floor, Ross earned a score of 14.500 points for a routine that included a high Arabian double front to stag jump for her first pass and a double tuck dismount. In the second rotation, Ross' double-twisting Yurchenko earned 15.300 points. Ross won the national title on uneven bars with a smoothly swung routine featuring precise handstand positions for a two-day total of 30.950 points, two points ahead of her closest competitor. On balance beam, Ross closed the meet with an impressive routine that included a switch ring leap and a double tuck dismount, winning her second national title with a combined score of 29.950 points.

Hartford, Connecticut - Bailie Key of Montgomery, Texas/Texas Dreams, won the junior women's all-around with a score of 118.550 points after the second of two days of competition at the P&G Gymnastics Championships at Hartford's (Conn.) XL Center. Lauren Hernandez of Old Bridge, N.J./MG Elite, won the silver medal with 116.650 points, and Amelia Hundley of Hamilton, Ohio/Cincinnati, finished third with 113.750 points. Women's competition continues tonight with the final day of the senior women's division, which includes 2012 Olympic team gold-medalists McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./All-Olympia, and Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max.
Key began her competition on the floor exercise, posting a combined score of 29.750 points that earned her the event title. Key tumbled four clean passes: an Arabian double front to stag jump; one-and-a-half twist through to a triple twist; front double full punch front; and a double pike dismount. She also showed perfect positions in her leaps. In the second rotation, Key vaulted a double-twisting Yurchenko for 14.750 points. On bars, Key improved her performance from the first day of competition with a Stalder-full to full-twisting double tuck dismount for 14.100 points and fourth place in the event rankings at 28.050. Key finished her competition on the balance beam, hitting a flip flop, flip flop layout series and a triple full dismount for a two-day total of 30.900 points and the beam title.
Hernandez, who was 21st at the 2012 U.S. Championships, soared to second in the all-around with eight solid routines. Bailie Key born on March 16th, 1999 is an American artistic gymnast. She was a member of the gold medal winning team at the 2012 City of Jesolo Trophy.

Sea Dogs rally and top New Britain in extra innings 6-5
Shaw RBI single nets victory in the tenth.New Britain, Connecticut - The Sea Dogs mounted a late inning rally and defeated New Britain in extra innings, 6-5 on Saturday night at New Britain Stadium. Travis Shaw's RBI single in the top of the tenth knocked in Shannon Wilkerson for the go-ahead run.
Chris Martin (1-0) pitched three innings of shutout relief to earn the win. Brock Huntzinger came on in the bottom half of the tenth and earned his third save of the year.
Kyle Kaminska worked five innings for the Sea Dogs, giving up four runs on seven hits. He struck out three and did not issue any walks.
New Britain's Alex Meyer also went five innings. He gave up two runs on six hits and struck out six Portland batters.
The Sea Dogs wasted no time getting on the board. Shaw and Tony Thomas both hit RBI doubles to give Portland the lead 2-0 in the top of the first.
New Britain would tie the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth. Evan Bigley reached on an infield single to shortstop scoring Nathan Hanson. The next batter was Curt Smith, who lined a double down the left field line scoring Josmil Pinto to make the score 2-2.
The Rock Cats would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Dan Rohfing scored on a Kaminska wild pitch to give New Britain the lead 3-2. Hanson singled to left scoring Antoan Richardson to make the score 4-2.
Daniel Bard pitched the sixth inning. He gave up one run on a Richardson RBI single to give New Britain a 5-2 lead. Bard struck out one and walked one.
Portland would bring the score within two runs in the top of the seventh as Thomas knocked his second RBI double of the ballgame scoring Peter Hissey to make it 5-3 New Britain.
The Sea Dogs' rally would continue in the eighth. Derrik Gibson would reach on an error by shortstop Danny Santana, scoring Christian Vazquez to make the score 5-4. The Sea Dogs would tie the ballgame at 5-5 on a Wilkerson RBI triple to left.

The Sea Dogs and Rock Cats (Twins affiliate) conclude their 3-game series from New Britain Stadium tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 PM. Connecticut native Matt Barnes makes his second start for Portland. Left-hander Blake Martin gets the starting nod for the Rock Cats. Governor LePage Announces Moment of Silence on Friday, Dec. 21 in Memory of the Victims in Newtown, Conn.
“Governor Dannel Malloy of Connecticut has declared Friday an official day of mourning in his state and has asked all governors to share in that observance by calling for a moment of silence at 9:30 that morning. We share in the grief of the Newtown community at this tragic loss of innocent life,” expressed Governor LePage.
In a letter to Governor LePage, Governor Malloy wrote, “In the last few days, the outpouring of love and compassion from your state and from around the world has been overwhelming, and the people of Connecticut will be forever grateful. Too often we focus on what divides us as people, instead of what binds us together as human beings.”
Malloy has also asked places of worship and government buildings in Connecticut to ring bells twenty-six times in honor of each life lost during the moment of silence.

2013 U.S. Gymnastics Championships is awarded to Hartford; all-session tickets on sale now
"The U.S. Gymnastics Championships and Hartford are a winning combination," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. The competition schedule for 2013 is: Aug. 14 – men's gymnastics, juniors at 1 p.m. and seniors at 6:30 p.m.; Aug. 15 – women's gymnastics, juniors at 1 p.m. and seniors at 6:30 p.m.; Aug. 16 – men's gymnastics, juniors at 1 p.m. and seniors at 6:30 p.m.; and Aug. 17 – women's gymnastics, juniors at 2 p.m. and seniors at 7:30 p.m. The schedule is subject to change, and times listed are Eastern.
All-session tickets for the U.S. Gymnastics Championships range in price from $125-$395. Prices vary according to ticket location, and the top-priced ticket is for the best seat location and includes an autographed commemorative poster. The U.S. Gymnastics Championships, previously known as the Visa Championships, determine U.S. champions and the U.S. national team for the junior and senior elite levels. The field will be determined closer to the competition.
Jordyn Wieber of DeWitt, Mich./Gedderts' Twistars USA, and John Orozco of the Bronx, N.Y./Team Hilton HHonors (U.S. Olympic Training Center) won the men's and women's U.S. all-around titles, respectively, at the 2012 Visa Championships. The roster of former U.S. all-around champions is a veritable who's who of gymnastics, including: women – Nastia Liukin, Shawn Johnson, Carly Patterson, Courtney Kupets, Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes, Kim Zmeskal and Mary Lou Retton; and men – Paul Hamm, Blaine Wilson, John Roethlisberger, Mitch Gaylord, Peter Vidmar and Bart Conner. The U.S. Gymnastics Championships traces its history back to 1897 for the men and 1931 for the women.
The 49th Annual USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show is a three-day event open to the entire gymnastics community. Held in conjunction with the U.S. Gymnastics Championships, National Congress provides a unique opportunity for presentations, demonstrations and educational seminars on a variety of topics and a large exhibitor's hall with additional business opportunities.
Background Information
The Connecticut Convention Center. The Connecticut Convention Center, which has more than 205,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space, is the site for the USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show. The facility offers an outdoor esplanade overlooking the Connecticut River and is connected to both the Hartford Marriott Downtown and the Connecticut Science Center.
XL Center. The XL Center, managed by AEG CT LLC, will host two days of competition for both men's and women's gymnastics. The XL Center is home to the University of Connecticut Men's & Women's Basketball teams along with the Connecticut Whale, the American Hockey League affiliate of the New York Rangers. In addition to resident teams, the XL Center entertains millions of visitors annually with a variety of concerts, family shows, sporting events, consumer & trade shows. "Restoring a Past, Charting a Future" Exhibit Opens Apr. 28th

Mystic, CT - Mystic Seaport, together with Dalvero Academy, is proud to present "Restoring a Past, Charting a Future: An Artistic Discovery of America's Whaling Legacy by Dalvero Academy," a ground-breaking, artistic interpretation of the restoration of the last wooden whaleship in the world, the Charles W. Morgan. Utilizing numerous mediums, including ink, watercolor, pastel, charcoal, sculpture and embroidery, twenty-four of the Academy's artists have created a remarkable exhibit that reflects the inspiration found within the Morgan and Mystic Seaport.
Exhibit History
During the winter of 2010, Veronica Lawlor and Margaret Hurst, the founders of the Dalvero Academy, a private, New York-based art school, traveled to Mystic Seaport and instantly were inspired by the Museum. Always on the lookout for new locations for the Academy, they believed the romance and history of Mystic Seaport would create an ideal environment for such artistic pursuits. On that visit, the instructors encountered Museum shipyard director Quentin Snediker, which then led to the unique opportunity to chronicle the restoration of the Morgan.
Multiple Views
During their many subsequent visits, the Academy's artists and two of its instructors created a wide range of art inspired by the Morgan. Varying aspects of the ship will be displayed in this exhibition, including reflections on the vessel's whaling past, careful illustrations of her current restoration, and symbolic representations her future: a 38th Voyage to make peace with those she once hunted.
Drawings large in scope depicting the 314-ton whaleship and the vast Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard will be exhibited alongside fine, detailed illustrations—one of which depicts the intricate whaling knot used to secure a line to a harpoon. Different perspectives of the vessel's past, present, and future journey will be shown to Museum visitors. Academy artist Alexander Charner responded to the exhibit's all-encompassing theme, remarking, "I responded strongly to a theme of redemption I found in the restoration of the Morgan. Multiple views reflect multiple restorations and multiple Morgans."
Visitors will also notice a reoccurring model throughout the exhibition: the Cinderella stamp. The minute scale of a postage stamp forces the artist to pare his or her ideas down to its essentials. A "Cinderella" stamp is so named because it is a fantasy stamp that serves the artist's ideas. It is the artists' hope that, just like Cinderella, one day their stamps may "go to the ball" and become official U.S. Postal Service stamps. Lawlor and Hurst asked the Academy's artists to design their own Cinderella stamps depicting any aspect of the Charles W. Morgan. The resulting stamps led the artists to a world of illustration and art that we are now proudly sharing with you.

Mystic Seaport is delighted to host this exhibit that showcases the remarkable work of these visionary artists. Working with the Museum's Exhibit Department staff, the artists took an active role in the exhibit's design and planning. All of the graphics for the show have been created entirely by the artists, and the Museum is honored to participate in this unique collaboration.

Paul Hendrickson, Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, traces the life of Ernest Hemingway, the 1954 Nobel Prize Laureate for Literature, during the key period from 1934 to 1961 -- from Hemingway's pinnacle as the reigning monarch of American letters until his suicide. The author, himself an outdoorsman and fisherman, describes his personal visits to the Hemingway villa in Havana and his beloved Pilar, a fishing boat now owned by the Cuban Government. This nonfictional account, published 50 years after Hemingway's death, follows the writer from Key West to Paris, Africa, Cuba and finally Idaho as he wrestles with his best angels and his worst demons. Whenever he could, he returns to Pilar, to exult in the sea, to fight the biggest fish he could find, to drink, to entertain celebrities and friends, seduce women, and be with his children.
