Caldbeck Gallery opening, A Year in the Georges River Watershed
On Friday May 2, 2014, join Georges River Land Trust and K2 Family Foundation at the Caldbeck Gallery for an opening reception of A Year in the Georges River Watershed from 5:00-8:00 PM, artwork created by the Land Trust’s 2013 Artists in Residence Michael Sacca and Elizabeth Billings. Elizabeth and Michael spent portions of last year exploring the Georges River watershed, visiting its preserves and trails, paddling the river and created art reflecting their experience and understanding of this river and land. This is their final show relative to their residency.
The residency program sponsored by the Land Trust and K2 Foundation offers professional visual artists, performing artists, and writers the opportunity to pursue their artistic disciplines while being inspired by the Georges River watershed’s extraordinary landscapes. Billings and Sacca were chosen from more than 25 applicants to be the first artists in residence last year. They share a similar visual aesthetic, and approach their work from diverse vantage points: photography, cinematography, drawing and weaving natural materials from the land. Using these techniques their goal was to visually portray the essence of the watershed and their connection to it.
The show will be at the gallery from May 2 – May 31. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 12-5 PM., location 12 Elm Street, Rockland. Arts in Rockland reception will be held on Friday, May 23, from 5-8 PM. For more information on this exhibit contact the gallery at 207-594-5935, email caldbeck@midcoast.com or visit their website www.caldbeck.com.

Maine Wildlife Park Opening For 2014 Season

Many families cannot wait to visit their favorite animals after a long winter, but close to 13,000 fans have ‘kept in touch’ with our wildlife via Facebook over the winter, ‘liking’ and commenting on photos posted of our wildlife as they adapted to winter snow and cold. But everyone’s ready to see the moose, bears, eagles, owls, foxes and more again in person!
The Wildlife Park has a variety of NEW things to see and do this year! A brand new native snake and amphibian exhibit is taking shape in the Visitor’s Center using the space formerly occupied by the restrooms. There are new games, puzzles and exhibits in there as well. The turtle ponds have been completely reconstructed to ameliorate leaking ponds and predation. The Friends of the Wildlife Park are funding the construction of a new lynx exhibit, on which work has already begun. The park also has a new resident, an unreleasable merlin, which can be viewed in the raptor exhibits.
New events are planned for several weekends beginning Saturday May 3, starting with a snake and turtle event. Raptor programs, an LLBean Camping Demo, a Tailgate Yard Sale, Summer Solstice Farmers Market, ‘Meet Donn Fendler Day’, Fish on Ice, Wildlife Encounters and Enchanted Forests will all be new

New Architectural Exhibition At The Farnsworth "The Homestead Project"
New Architectural Exhibition At The Farnsworth "The Homestead Project"
When the Farnsworth family moved in 1850 from Thomaston to their new home in Rockland, the move signified an embrace of contemporary architecture of the period and, up until the time of William Farnsworth’s death in 1876, an even deeper embrace of period art and design in the interior of what has become known as the Farnsworth Homestead. The house was situated right in the heart of the newly formed village of Rockland, a block from the town’s main thoroughfare, two blocks from a bustling harbor and surrounded by other buildings of equally recent design and construction.
For the Homestead Project, principals from ten architectural firms have been charged with creating a home for a growing family in 2012, loosely modeled on the Farnsworths of 1849: a successful businessman, his wife and three young children.
The participating architects are:
Balancing elements of privacy with public exposure for a home situated in 2012 on what is now the Farnsworth Museum campus, architects and their teams have designed a new “Farnsworth Homestead” on the current site, taking into consideration the surrounding museum block and current zoning codes. This exhibition is made possible in part thanks to the generous support of A.E. Sampson & Son, Bench Dogs, Inc., Cold Mountain Builders, J.C. Stone, Inc., Marvin Windows and Doors, Thos. Moser Fine Furniture, Tidewater Millwork, and Windsor Chairmakers. The primary media sponsor for the exhibition is Maine Home + Design.
