Women’s Indoor Track & Field Wins 21st Little East Conference Championship

GORHAM, Maine– Led by seven first place finishes, the University of Southern Maine women’s indoor track and field team scored 188 points on their way to claiming their 21st Little East Conference Championship on Saturday in Gorham.

Recap: The Huskies swept all three jump events with Olivia Jalbert (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) winning the long jump with a mark of 5.19m and the high jump, clearing 1.61m, Phoebe Slovenski (Cape Neddick, Maine/York) winning the pole vault with a jump of 2.95m, and Ella Boucher (Auburn, Maine/Auburn) taking home a win in the triple jump, jumping 10.11m. 


Jalbert led a group of Huskies in the long jump and high jump with Olivia Richmond (Jefferson, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and Boucher taking fifth and sixth in the long jump and Richmond and Cassandra Kane (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) taking second and third in the high jump. Sarah Fecteau (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) came away with a second place finish in the pole vault. 


In the shot put, Jaigan Boudreau (Dayton, Maine/Thornton Academy) continued her successful rookie campaign, winning the event with a throw of 12.24m. Zoe Barnes (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) and Hannah Corbett (Sebago, Maine/Bonny Eagle) placed second and third in the shot put and Corbett was the Huskies’ top finisher in the weight throw, throwing 12.91m for fifth place.


Also picking up wins for the Huskies were Rosemary Train (Long Island, Maine/Cheverus) and the 4x400m relay of Train, Anna Reny (Gardiner, Maine/Cony), Heaven Conley (Ogunquit, Maine/Wells), and Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine/Freeport). Train won the 600m run in a time of 1:41.65 and the 4x400m relay team ran to a first place time of 4:15.62. 


Reny turned in a couple of other key performances for the Huskies, taking second in the 55m hurdles in 8.72 seconds and third in the 400m dash in 1:01.32. Ana Hewett (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee) and Richmond finished third and sixth in the 55m hurdles, while Sophia Poole (Oakland, Maine/Waterville) accompanied Reny in the 400m run, finishing fifth. 


The Huskies had four athletes compete in the finals of the 55m dash with Gould taking second in 7.34. Noonan came in third, Maddie Fornasier (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) sixth, and Mackenzie Betty (Nashua, NH/Nashua) took eighth. Gould took second in the 200m dash as well with a time of 26.34, while Conley finished fifth in 27.15. The 4x200m relay of Betty, Fornasier, Mackenzie Banks (Belfast, Maine/Belfast), and Poole narrowly took second place in a time of 1:53.75.


USM also saw success in distance events with Lucy Knowlton (Portland, Maine/Leavitt) and Olivia Mosca (Brewer, Maine/Brewer) taking second and third in the mile in 5:36.54 and 5:39.29, respectively. In the 3000 meter run, Knowlton again took second, while Rachael Raymond (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) took fifth. The two ran 11:28.14 and 12:09.01. Also scoring points for the Huskies was the 4x800m relay of Mosca, Samantha Thompson (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook), Vanessa DiRisi (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough), and Amy Forester (York, Maine/York), which finished in sixth place with a time of 11:24.99.


Up Next: The Huskies are heading to the New England Division III Indoor Championships on February 25 and February 26 in Waterville, Maine.
