Men’s Track and Field Finishes Fourth at Little East Conference Championship

GORHAM, Maine– Ben Drummey (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford), Masho Gebremikael (Portland, Maine/Deering), and Keegan Cochrane (Chelsea, Maine/Schenectady) each picked up individual wins as the University of Southern Maine men’s indoor track and field team took fourth place at the Little East Conference Championships on Saturday in Gorham.

Recap: Drummey won the pole vault, jumping 4.95m, while teammates Riley Peterson (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury) and Alyas Ahmady (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) also had stellar days, taking second and third. Also posting a number of good marks in field events was Jacob Jackson (Auburn, Maine/Auburn). Jackson took fourth in the high jump (1.85m) and the triple jump (12.93m), and finished fifth in the long jump (6.28m). 


Gebremikael led the charge in distance events winning the 5000m run title in a blistering 15:56.15. Cody Mathewson (Lebanon, Conn/Lyman Memorial) placed third in the 5000m run in 16:02.72. Gebremikael also scored points for the Huskies in the 3000m run, finishing in fifth with a time of 9:26.64. In the mile, Jordan Duplessie (Caribou, Maine/Caribou) ran 4:32.63 for a sixth place finish. The 4x800m relay of Duplessie, Scott Lightbody (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk), Mathewson, and Jack Pecoraro (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) finished fourth in 8:44.37.


In the 600m run, Cochrane took home the gold with a time of 1:24.97. He then turned around to help the 4x200m relay team grab second place in 1:33.46. He was joined by teammates Michael Geary (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely), Jaequan Grant (East Granby, Conn./East Granby), and Daniel Flaherty (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) on the 4x200m relay team. Flaherty also competed in the 400m dash taking fifth in 53.79. He and Grant qualified for the competitive final of the 55m dash and finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively.


Up Next: The Huskies are heading to the New England Division III Indoor Championships on February 26 in Middlebury, Vt.
