Harkleroad Announces Gebremikael, Mathewson as 2021 Captains

GORHAM, Maine – The no. 9 regionally-ranked University of Southern Maine men’s cross country program led by ninth-year head coach Ryan Harkleroad is delighted to announce the selections of his team captains for the 2021 campaign. Their leadership group will consist of senior Masho Gebremikael (Portland, ME) and sophomore Cody Mathewson (Lebanon, CT).
“Masho and Cody are both individuals that lead
by example; whether at practice, a meet, in the classroom, or in the USM community,” said head coach Ryan Harkleroad. “They set the tone for what we expect our student-athletes to aspire towards and do so while being incredibly supportive and encouraging teammates.”
Gebremikael is a four-year member of the Husky cross country program and an athletic training major. Back in 2019 at the Little East Championship, he earned All-Little East Conference First Team honors placing eighth at 25:58.68. He also competed at the NCAA Regionals in 2019 and placed 81st with a time of 26:31.0.
Mathewson, a health science major returns for his second full season as a Husky. As a freshman, he competed at the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth Cross Country Invitational Sub-Varsity Race and placed 22nd finishing the five-mile event in 28:54.71. One of his best finishes of the campaign came at the Bates Super Meet where he ran a 29:27.7 8k for 68th place.
The Huskies start their year on Friday, September 3 with a race against Husson University at 4:30 p.m. on the campus of the Narragansett School in Gorham, ME.
