GORHAM, Maine – Team captains Masho Gebremikael (Portland, ME) and Cody Mathewson (Lebanon, CT) completed the season-opening 5K run in first and third place respectively as the no. 9 regionally-ranked University of Southern Maine men’s cross country program bested Husson University in a head-to-head duel early Friday evening.
Gebremikael crossed the finish line at 16:19.40 a couple of seconds ahead of second-place finisher Joel Bond. Mathewson was exactly six seconds behind his first-place teammate for third with a
time of 16:25.40. Junior Jacob Gamache (Auburn, ME) rounded out the top-five finishers coming in fourth (16:30.40).
Newcomer Jordan Duplessie (Caribou, ME) and sophomore Jack Pecoraro (Westbrook, ME) ran through the tape for seventh and eighth place with 16:56.80 and 17:03.10 times. Junior Erik Larkin (Scarborough, ME) and freshman Anthony O’Donnell (Portland, ME) were in13th and 14th place at 18:05.10 and 18:12.00. Freshman Matthew Pooler (Waterboro, ME) (18:36.30), Cameron Nelson (Damariscotta, ME) (18:36.90), and freshman Andrew Seile (Glenburn, ME) (19:05.20) also competed for the navy and gold taking home 16th, 18th and 20th place.
The Huskies hit the road next Saturday, September 11th for a showdown with Thomas College in Waterville, ME.
