Orland, Maine - Come spend the day outdoors, snow or no, at Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery and the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands!
There’ll be a bonfire & wienie roast from noon to 2 pm at the fish hatchery. Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust will provide sticks and franks and cocoa; bring anything else you’d like and come and go as you please.
The annual Wildlands Snowshoe Run starts at noon at the hatchery; it’s a 4.9-mile run or walk on snowshoes (or other shoes!), following snowy dirt roads and single track trails into the Wildlands, with plenty of hills, small stream crossings and gorgeous views. If there is no snow, bring rugged running shoes or creepers! Proceeds benefit GPMCT; pre-registration is $10 or $25/family, and race day registration, starting at 11 am, is $15 or $35/family. Prizes and refreshments available. Visit www.greatpondtrust.org for map, details and registration form, or contact Peter Keeney, 207-288-3909 or pktrldrt@myfairpoint.net. Volunteers are needed! E-mail info@greatpondtrust.org or text 974-7097.
At 2 pm, join Maine Primitive Skills School elder Isaac Dorr at the hatchery for a shelter-building demo. If it’s snowy, we’ll build a quinzee snow shelter; if not we’ll do a brush-shelter or lean-to, then show you how to build a cozy fire using a bow drill! All ages welcome.
Bring skis, snowshoes or hiking boots and make a day of enjoying the beautiful Wildlands and fish hatchery trails!
