NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Emily Martin scored late in the first overtime to lift Colby-Sawyer to a 1-0 victory over Maine Maritime in the NAC Semifinals on Tuesday afternoon.
In an evenly played match, each team saw a fair share of scoring opportunities but could not break through thanks to impressive goaltending and timely defense. Both teams took seven shots in the first half, but the Chargers went on to hold an overall 19-13 shot advantage on the afternoon.
The Mariners had the best chance of the contest eight minutes into the second half when NAC Rookie of the Year Makayla Lewis(Purcellville, Va.) got behind the Colby-Sawyer goalie Karley Hamilton and took a shot that was blocked by Martin to keep things scoreless.
With a little under two and half minutes remaining in the first overtime, Martin gathered the ball and ripped a shot from 25 yards out that hit off a player a few yards in front of her, keeping the ball on an upward trajectory ending up in the top left corner of the net, to break the scoreless match and send the Chargers to victory.
Maine Maritime's keeper Maggie McConkey (Fryeburg, Maine) had eight stops in the loss, while Hamilton made six saves and earned her eighth shutout of the season for the Chargers.
Lewis led the Mariners with six shots, while Tori Cooper (Saco, Maine) took five shots. Both players landed three shots on net to lead the offensive attack.
"I couldn't be more proud of my team," said Maine Maritime's Head Coach Seth Brown, "Their effort was fearless. We played the game with heart, passion and courage. The whole MMA community can feel proud of this group of women."
The Mariners conclude their season with a 10-8-1 overall record, their best record since going 10-7-1 in 2009. With the win, the second seed Chargers improve to 12-3-2 and will host the fourth seed New England College for the NAC Championship on Saturday. The Pilgrims upset top seeded Castleton, 3-1, in today's other semifinal match.
