Lewiston, Maine - On Tuesday evening, March 17th at 6:30 p.m., join Lewiston Public Library in Callahan Hall as host Maine author Kate Webber talking about her recent publication, Swan’s Island Chronicles: Borrowed, Exaggerated and Half-Forgotten Tales of Island Life.
The small downeast Maine community of Swan’s Island has seen summer people come and go, but it has held on to its stories. In her recent “Chronicles,” Kate illustrates island life with humor, affection and the voices of islanders—from the first settlement and 1950s hijinks to courtship and commerce. The book explores the first and last one-room schools, island romance in sock-hop days and much more.
Kate earned a degree in anthropology from Bates College (Class of 2011), with concentrations in “environment, place and history” and “medieval worlds.” Kate worked with the Freeport Historical Society before spending two years with the Swan’s Island Historical Society through the Island Institute’s fellow program. Her varied historical work and observations on the island's social life led to a column in The Working Waterfront, which formed the basis for this book.
