Portland, Maine - The Portland Fire Department responded to a three-alarm fire on Saturday morning at 20-24 Noyes Street, a two-family residence, after receiving multiple calls beginning at 7:17 AM. Upon arrival, the Fire Department found an advanced fire.
There were five fatalities, one person was transported to Maine Medical Center and released, and one person was taken to Maine Medical Center and has since been transported to a burn center in Boston. The person in Boston is still in critical condition. Seven other tenants did manage to escape safely from the building.
The Medical Examiner’s office is still in the process of identifying the five victims and notifying next
of kin. The State Fire Marshall’s office is still completing its investigation and has not been able to determine a cause at this point.
In light of this tragedy, and the fact that today clocks were turned back for the end of Daylight Savings, Fire officials would like to remind people about important fire safety measures. These include checking smoke detectors to make sure they are in working order, replacing batteries, and having a fire escape plan in place.
A press conference is planned for tomorrow to provide available updates. Time and location to be determined.
