CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS AT VICTORIA MANSION

Portland, Maine - Victoria Mansion's Christmas season is bursting with family-friendly programming this year. Expanding on the success of last year's offerings, the Mansion will host three distinctive events for children: Stories on the Staircase, Night of the Nutcracker with Portland Ballet, and a special preview of the Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine performance of Beatrix Potter's Christmas by Thomas W. Olson. All of these special events highlight the Mansion's themed decorations of Christmas 100 Years Past.

Stories on the Staircase is a free, pre-school story hour offered every Saturday at 10:00 am November 29 through January 3. This event gives children the chance to see the house on tours tailored just to them. Space is limited so reservations are requested.

Night of the Nutcracker with Portland Ballet features dancers from The Victorian Nutcracker in the stair hall
at Victoria Mansion on the evening Sunday, December 7th. With every paying adult ($15.00 or $13.50), two children are admitted free of charge. Reservations required, shows at 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, and 7:00.

Monday, December 8, at 6:00, actors from the Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine will present a brief preview of scenes from their upcoming performance of Beatrix Potter's Christmas, which tells the story of Beatrix Potter's childhood and the inspiration for some of her most beloved tales. As actors perform in the Mansion's lavishly decorated interiors they will bring life to the house, reminding viewers that it was once a home filled with extended family celebrating holidays together. This performance is free of charge with admission to the Mansion; reservations will not be taken. For more information on the Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine, please visit www.kitetails.org.

"Each of these events aims to attract new visitors so they can fall in love with the Mansion," says Director of Education and Visitor Services Lucinda Hannington. "House museums run the risk of seeming 'adult only' because visitors aren't allowed to touch but we strive to make Victoria Mansion a place for families to come over and over. The Mansion, especially at Christmas, is visually stimulating and the ideal place to impress kids with the grandeur of the past while offering them opportunities to engage with the present."

During the Christmas season, the Mansion expects to welcome nearly 10,000 visitors, mostly from Maine. "Christmas is a time to welcome the community, especially families, to share in this amazing piece of history," says Executive Director Thomas Johnson. "Entertaining, educational events reach out to a different group of visitors than we typically see and they help foster a love of museums in younger generations."
