St. Joseph Hospital’s Laboratory Receives Accreditation

BANGOR, Maine - St. Joseph Hospital’s Main laboratory recently was awarded an accreditation by The Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists. This accreditation is based on the results of a recent inspection.

CAP-accredited laboratories must adhere to rigorous regulatory requirements to achieve accreditation.  A copy of the inspection report was left with the laboratory director.

The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, which began in the early 1960s, is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program.

The CAP accreditation process takes two years to complete. Throughout the two years, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control, the qualifications of the entire staff, the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, the safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory. The stringent inspection program is designed to ensure the highest standard of care for the laboratory’s patients.
